Entering into and arising from cessation, but not manifesting cessation, because in that stage, the perfection of skillful means is well ignited and completely purified. What is the nature of what is called cessation samadhi? The sutra says: Only the name of cessation samadhi appears, but its great characteristics are different. Thus, the noble Asanga said: What is cessation samadhi? It is the intention led by the mind that dwells in peace, separated from the desire for the sphere of nothingness and transcending the peak of existence, so that the impermanent mind and mental factors, and some of the permanent ones, are ceased, and this is called cessation samadhi. Thus, it is explained as a non-associated formation imputed to the state of the aggregates where the seven consciousnesses, together with their retinues, are stopped. However, this teacher calls the suchness that is free from all elaborations cessation. When one obtains the perfection of wisdom on the sixth ground, he considers that entering into such cessation as desired is called cessation samadhi. The commentary says: Entering into cessation is entering into the ultimate reality, therefore suchness is said to be cessation, because all elaborations will cease. Therefore, cessation samadhi is a special transcendental wisdom. Because the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas greatly rejoice in peace, they will abide for a long time when they enter into cessation. Bodhisattvas, because they do not desire peace and are skilled in means, enter into and arise from cessation every moment from the seventh ground onwards, thus they overcome the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas with the power of their wisdom. The Madhyamakavatara says: Explanation of the seventh Bodhicitta.

In order to obtain more and more merit than the two accumulations of the seventh level and below, one will enter the eighth immovable level, where one obtains forbearance of the unborn dharma and does not regress in any way from perfect enlightenment. How does the eighth level obtain more merit than the seventh level and below? The seventh level and below is because of effort, and after obtaining the eighth level, it enters naturally without effort. For example, a large boat moves with effort until it reaches the ocean, and after reaching the ocean, it is propelled by the wind and moves effortlessly, with a difference in speed. Furthermore, its aspiration becomes extremely pure, and the Buddhas cause it to rise from cessation. Whatever countless hundreds of thousands of aspirations this Bodhisattva made when he first generated the mind of enlightenment will also become completely pure at this time, and therefore, the perfection of aspiration will be extremely superior to it. As soon as the Bodhisattva's immovable level is attained, because all defilements have been abandoned and in order to become accustomed to the realm of dharma for a long time, one will enter cessation in the nature of suchness without effort. At that time, the Buddhas will say: You do not have our wisdom, power, etc., the Buddha's teachings, so strive for that. Etc., causing one to rise from cessation and urging one to approach the wisdom of the Tathagata. Why do they cause this one to rise from cessation? In order to obtain the Buddha's teachings, like this: A mind without attachment does not abide together with faults, so those stains on the eighth level are pacified together with their roots. Although defilements are exhausted and one has become the supreme of the three realms, the wealth of the Buddhas is like the sky, boundless and cannot be completely obtained. The stains of defilements that arise in the three realms, which are the cause of birth on the eighth level, are pacified together with their roots, just as light and darkness cannot abide together, one is not attached to anything and does not discriminate.

Because the mind of wisdom does not coexist with faults such as attachment. Therefore, although one is worthy of offerings and becomes the supreme in the three realms because of exhausting all defilements, one is not able to obtain all the qualities and riches of the Buddhas. In order to obtain these, one must strive diligently. If a Bodhisattva abandons all defilements at that stage, how can his Buddha-dharma be perfected, since there is no cause for being born in samsara? Even if samsara ceases, one will attain the ten powers, and through these powers, one will show various forms of oneself to the beings in existence. Although he has ceased samsara, even so, he will attain the ten powers that will be explained, and by the power of these, for the sake of other beings in existence, he will show various forms of himself through the door of the mind-made body. Therefore, this is not contradictory to the completion of all accumulations. What is this called the mind-made body? It is like this: Just as the mind goes anywhere at will and is unobstructed in anything, so too, this is similar to that, and therefore it is called the mind-made body. The ten powers are: blessing life for incalculable eons, which is the power over life; entering into immeasurable gates of samadhi, which is the power over samadhi; blessing and universally showing the world adorned with many decorations, which is the power over resources; universally showing the ripening of karma by blessing it as it is in time, which is the power over karma; universally showing births that are appropriate to those to be tamed in all the worlds, which is the power over birth; universally showing perfect enlightenment in whatever Buddha-field and time one desires, which is the power over aspiration; universally showing all worlds filled with Buddhas, which is the power over desire; universally showing miraculous transformations in all Buddha-fields, which is the power over miracles; universally showing the Tathagata's powers and fearlessness, and other Buddha-dharmas, which is the
