Therefore, in order to refresh my own memory, to benefit other fortunate ones, and to ensure the long-lasting existence of the Buddha's teachings, I will explain this path of the Buddhas of the three times. Whatever virtue arises from striving here with pure intention, may it, like the radiant white and stainless light of the autumn moon, dispel the suffering of all beings' afflictions, and may it cause the lotus garden of the Sugata's teachings to flourish! In all my future lives, may I dwell on the peak of the snowy mountains of the Buddha's teachings, be adorned with the burden of the three trainings, and roar the lion's roar of emptiness! For those magnificent mountains of eternalist and nihilist extreme views, and those who have long dwelt there with the stain of clinging to views, may they be terrified even by seeing or hearing my name, may I become a lion of speech! May I always be ordained, possess the fragrance of pure morality, and with the unhindered courage of not relying on others, uphold the sacred Dharma of the Buddhas! This commentary on the Madhyamakavatara, called "The Lamp Illuminating Suchness," is a work that comprehends the meaning of the boundless Middle Way, the meaning of all the Sugata's scriptures, by the Shakya monk, Youthful Intelligence, at the great monastery of glorious Sakya. May this treatise benefit the teachings and many sentient beings! The Limb of Accomplishing the Task ༀ་སྭསྟི་སིདྡྷ྄ཾ། (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari: oṃ svasti siddham, Sanskrit Romanization: oṃ svasti siddham, Literal Chinese meaning: Om, auspicious, accomplishment). Not bound by the shadows of sectarian bias, the deity accomplished by the valid cognizers who are the witness and the eye, the offering pillar of the three realms, Mandara, may the Guru Shakya King protect this world. What is not found by gods, sages, and accomplished ones, and cannot be compared to wish-fulfilling jewels, no matter how many great rivers of Dharma doors flow, they do not follow the nectar of the profound Middle Way. The profound, peaceful, free from elaboration, clear light, uncompounded, what I have realized, others do not know, even the lamp of the world with the ten powers, temporarily ceased to proclaim the great sound of Dharma. Although the path of the Sugatas of the three times is this, because of stumbling on the precipice of eternalism and nihilism, fearing that the minds of those to be tamed would fall into extreme views, he taught by means of direct and indirect methods. Just as seeing the ocean causes fear, although one cannot enter into its meaning, the perfectly enlightened Buddha shakes the adornment of the matted locks of scriptures.

With the army of logic and reason, raising the boat of Dharma, That noble Nagarjuna, the wise leader like a merchant, Placing those who desire liberation on the island of jewels, Like extracting butter from milk, this essence of Dharma. He elucidated the great path of definitive meaning, His treatises are the friends that open the garden of white lotuses. Entering the cloud path of Madhyamaka, without fatigue, The cool rays of glorious Chandrakirti, Like the light of day, illuminate everything. His profound intention, the vajra realm, Although explained by many Indian and Tibetan scholars, It is difficult to fathom with few words, The most excellent among all, highly praised, The Sakya school, the lord of the complete teachings, The excellent speech of Jamyang, the lion of speech, Comprehensively gathering the meaning of the scriptures, possessing glorious petals, The great commentary is the great source of benefit and happiness. In order to fulfill the wishes of the venerable lama, From the printing plate, the same container, The virtuous deeds that manifest countless forms, Through the accumulated vast merit, May the precious essence of the Sage's tradition endure, fulfilling all desires for benefit and happiness. May the lotus feet of Jamyang Lama be eternally firm, and may beings enjoy the glorious age of fulfillment. May I, in all lifetimes, possess the wealth of the noble ones, and attain the stainless Dharma eye. May this virtue, which solely benefits the Buddha's teachings, bring about inconceivable merits! Thus, this is the source of the profound Madhyamaka commentary with four special qualities, the intention of all the Sugatas, which is the great door called "Pervasive Good Speech". The supreme lama, the fully enlightened Buddha, the great pandita Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo, whose kindness is unparalleled, whose stainless foot dust touches my crown, making me fortunate, Jamyang Yonten Taye, at the time of accomplishing according to the wishes of the lama, was created by the donor himself. May I and all limitless sentient beings, in all births and lifetimes, always hold the sacred Dharma of all the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, and become the cause of possessing unobstructed form and courage.
