That which arises from causes and conditions is called conditioned. That itself being empty of that is the emptiness of the conditioned. That which has no arising, abiding, or ceasing is called unconditioned. What is the emptiness of this? That is the emptiness of the unconditioned. That which has no arising in the beginning, no abiding in the middle, and no ceasing in the end is called unconditioned. That which is empty of its own nature is the emptiness of the unconditioned. Why is this said? It is said to prevent the Specific Sayers and others from grasping even the unconditioned, such as space, as permanent entities. That which has no end is called beyond end. What is the emptiness of that? That is the emptiness beyond end. That which has no extremes of permanence and annihilation is beyond extremes, that is, the Middle Way. That itself being empty of its own nature is the emptiness beyond extremes. This is also said to prevent clinging to the Middle Way, which abandons permanence and annihilation. Beginning, first, end, final limit, since those are not, samsara is said to be without beginning or end; since it is free from going and coming, like a dream, this existence, what is empty of that, that is the emptiness of no beginning and no end, so it is definitely declared in the scriptures. Samsara has no beginning or first, because it would follow that it arises without a cause. Since there is no beginning, there is no end, because the end depends on the beginning. That which has no beginning and no end has no middle. That which has no beginning, end, or middle is not seen to come from before to here or go from here to later. Therefore, this existence, like a dream, what is empty of its own nature, that is the emptiness of no beginning and no end, as declared in the scriptures, the Prajnaparamita, which possesses the qualities of taming and protecting. Abandoning is said to be scattering and losing. Non-abandoning is not giving up, what is not lost at all. Because of that non-abandoning nature, what is empty of that nature, therefore it is called non-abandoning, emptiness is said. Abandoning is the definite name for losing, scattering, and giving up, and in conventional terms, anything

Whatever is not to be abandoned or discarded, but should be accepted, such as generosity and other virtuous deeds, that is what is not to be abandoned. The emptiness of that which is empty by this non-abandonment is called the emptiness of non-abandonment. This is taught to dispel the attachment to virtue as something to be taken. The self-nature of conditioned phenomena, etc., because disciples, self-awakened ones, bodhisattvas, and tathagatas have not created it, therefore, the self-nature of conditioned phenomena, etc., is declared to be intrinsic nature. The emptiness of that by that is intrinsic emptiness. The nature of conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, etc., is not created by the knowledge and vision of disciples such as hearers, therefore it is called intrinsic nature. And the emptiness that is empty by this nature is called intrinsic emptiness. The eighteen realms and the six contacts, and the six dharmas arising from them, likewise form and formless, conditioned and unconditioned dharmas, all these dharmas, the emptiness that is devoid of them, is the emptiness of all dharmas. The six inner realms, such as the eye, the six outer realms, such as form, and the six consciousness realms, such as eye consciousness, are the eighteen realms; the six contacts, such as the contact of the eye with form; and the emptiness of all dharmas, such as the six feelings arising from these, by their own nature, is the emptiness of all dharmas. That which is impermanent, etc., and unreal is the emptiness of self-characteristics. The self-characteristics of the dharmas from form to omniscience, such as impermanence, etc., if there is no true entity, that is the emptiness of self-characteristics. Showing the characteristics of form and other dharmas What are the characteristics of form and other dharmas? To show them in detail, it is said: Form has the characteristic of being changeable, feeling has the characteristic of experiencing, perception has the characteristic of apprehending signs, formation has the characteristic of manifestly forming. Consciousness separately knows objects, that is the nature of consciousness. The nature of aggregates is suffering, the nature of realms is like the venom of a poisonous snake. Form is that which has form, and when internal things come into contact with each other, it can produce change.
