You are also the same. Form and so on are without inherent existence, and are considered to be external emptiness. The six external sense bases, such as form, are called external dharmas, and that which is empty of its own nature in the manner described above is called external emptiness. When both are without inherent existence, it is the emptiness of both internal and external. The absence of inherent existence in both internal and external sense bases is the emptiness of both internal and external. Others consider the body of the powerful one to be the inner continuum and the sense bases to be external, thus considering it to be the basis of the emptiness of both internal and external. Dharmas are without inherent existence, and the wise call it emptiness. That emptiness is also considered to be empty in nature by emptiness. That which is called the emptiness of emptiness is considered to be emptiness of emptiness, and it is spoken to avert the clinging of those who have a mind of emptiness as a real thing. The absence of inherent existence of external and internal dharmas, which are empty of their own nature, is called emptiness. Emptiness is also as it is said: If there is something that is not empty, there will be something that is empty. If there is nothing that is not empty, how can there be emptiness? As it is said, if there is a dharma that is not empty by its own nature, then on such a basis of refutation, there will be a dharma that refutes certain refutable dharmas, which is called emptiness. If, according to the reasoning mentioned earlier, there is not even a little dharma that is not empty, then the so-called emptiness, even a little that is established by its own nature, cannot be seen. Therefore, that emptiness is also emptiness, empty of its own nature, and that is the emptiness of emptiness. Why is this said? Because foolish people, when all dharmas are shown to be emptiness, cling to emptiness as a real thing or as truth, it is said to avert their clinging, as it is said: In order to destroy all conceptualizations, you have shown the nectar of emptiness. Those who cling to it, you rebuke them. In the Dense Array Sutra it is also said: Even if one hears the view of emptiness, if some people's views do not disappear, they are incurable view holders, like a patient abandoned by a doctor. Thus, emptiness

Those who cling to existence are like patients abandoned by a doctor, because they are said to be holders of incurable views. The sentient and container worlds are great in nature because they are all-pervasive and because the limits of limitless examples are nonexistent. All ten of these, with the nature of directions, whatever emptiness is, is the great emptiness, spoken to dispel clinging to greatness. The directions, such as the east, pervade all sentient beings and the container world without exception, because sentient beings and containers located in those parts of the directions are designated as that direction, such as the east. Thus, because they pervade without exception, the directions are great in nature. Furthermore, meditating on love, etc., is done by completely cutting off the directions, so the directions abide as limitless examples, and therefore they are also great because of being limitless. All ten of these, such as the east, whatever is empty in nature of the directions, is called the great emptiness. Why is this taught? It is taught to counteract the clinging of the Materialists and others who cling to a great substance that pervades everything. This is the ultimate need, so it is ultimate nirvana. That which is empty of that is ultimate emptiness. To counteract the clinging of the wise to real nirvana, ultimate emptiness is taught by ultimate wisdom. Nirvana is the best of all needs of beings, therefore it is called ultimate. As it is said: If nirvana were real, then nirvana would become conditioned. There is no thing that is not conditioned, it does not exist anywhere. In this way, because it is not real, whatever emptiness is of nirvana, is called ultimate emptiness. Why is this taught? It is taught to counteract the clinging of those who say that nirvana is an obstruction, a real thing. Because the three realms arise from conditions, they are definitely asserted to be conditioned. That which is empty of that is called conditioned emptiness. The three realms, such as the desire realm, are
