Like the blueness of patterns, they are qualities and possessors of qualities; like vases and shapes, they are parts and possessors of parts; like vases with bulging bellies and shrunken feet, they are characteristics and possessors of characteristics; particularly clinging to beautiful objects like forms, and the attachment and clinging that serve as their basis; like firewood and fire, they are what is burned and what burns, and so on. Just like a chariot, if you search with the sevenfold analysis, it is not found. Without analyzing in that way, but merely according to worldly convention, these terms exist. Special Analysis of Cause and Effect. Second, the special analysis of cause and effect is divided into two: showing the mutual dependence of cause and effect, and refuting by examining contact and non-contact. The first is: If a cause produces what is to be produced, then it is a cause; if it does not produce a result, then it will not become a cause. Also, if a result arises because there is a cause, then arising changes. From what does what change, or from what before what changes, tell me. If you think that the seed, which is considered the cause, produces the sprout, which is to be produced, then that seed is the cause; if it does not produce that result, then the name of cause will disappear, because the cause to which the name of cause applies will become causeless. The result, the sprout, also arises because there is a cause, the seed, so cause and result do not exist by their own nature. If you think they are established by their own essence, then which, cause or result, is established first, and which, cause or result, arises later, which will be established? Or which is stable, and before it which basis is established, must be said. But that is not possible, therefore, the designation of cause and result should also be understood as being designated dependently, like a chariot. Second, it is divided into the real and the rejection of sameness. The first is: If you say that the cause produces the result by contact, then because the power is the same, there will be no difference between cause and result; if there is no contact, then there will be no difference between cause and non-cause. If these two are abandoned, then there will be no other conception. If, according to your system, cause and effect are established by their own nature, then does it produce by contact? Or does it produce without contact?

If the cause produces the effect by uniting with it, it is like the waters of rivers and oceans uniting without any difference. Because the power becomes one, there is no distinction of 'this is the cause' and 'this is the effect.' If it produces without uniting, just as no other effect arises without uniting, the desired effect will also not arise. Or, for each effect and non-effect, all causes and non-causes will produce, because not uniting is the same. Therefore, there will be no difference between cause and non-cause. For those who say that cause and effect are established by their own nature, having abandoned these two discriminations of uniting and not uniting, there is no other third discrimination, so the cause established by its own nature simply does not produce the effect. Therefore, if the cause does not produce the effect, there is no effect. The cause without an effect will become causeless, and it is not what is desired. If the cause does not produce the effect, because there is no effect, the cause that is separate from the effect will become causeless, which is the term applied to a cause, because the application of the term 'cause' depends on the effect. Whether the cause is considered causeless or not, therefore, cause and effect are not established by their own nature. How are cause and effect in your system? Because these two are like illusions, therefore, I have no fault, and worldly phenomena also exist. For those who say that cause and effect are established by their own nature, the analysis as described above applies. According to their view, phenomena are produced by false imputation and are therefore like illusions, without inherent existence. Although without inherent existence, they become objects of perception, like hairs seen by someone with blurred vision, and there is nothing to analyze in that case. Therefore, for the Madhyamikas, there is no point in analyzing whether cause and effect unite or not to find fault. Worldly phenomena that are established without analysis also exist, so everything is established. Second, refuting the similarity. First, stating the similarity: Saying things like, 'Does the cause produce the effect by uniting with it, or without uniting?' This is a similar objection and analysis for you as well.
