Da. Form is not self, because self and characteristics are inconsistent. Just as a man wears a necklace, I am also not possessed of form, because they do not exist elsewhere. Like a lion in a mountain cave, I also do not dwell in form by following it. Nor can I control form like the wealth of Dedajin. In this way, through four ways, it should be known that there is no self in all the aggregates of names. Thus, the five aggregates are separate from self, and as previously stated, clinging to them as self through the opposite four ways is the view of self or the view of the perishable collection, which is considered to be twenty extreme views. If it is said in the scriptures: Not the aggregates, not different from the aggregates, without the aggregates, there is no such thing, the Tathagata is not with aggregates, what is the Tathagata? Isn't it said that there are five kinds of analysis? Therefore, if this becomes twenty-five parts, how can it become twenty parts? Those parts of the view of the perishable collection are separately established from the sutras. Moreover, without clinging to the aggregates, one cannot manifestly cling to self, so through the four ways such as form is self, one engages by focusing on the aggregates. Like this, apart from the aggregates, there is nothing that can manifestly cling to self, so the fifth view of the perishable collection is impossible. Therefore, the view of the perishable collection is only twenty parts. It is said in the scriptures that the fifth aspect of otherness is said to refute the views of the heretics, and this should be understood. Precisely because the view of the perishable collection is determined to be twenty parts, the self destroyed by the wisdom vajra that realizes selflessness perishes together with the perishable collection. These are the high peaks that dwell on the stable mountain of the view of the perishable collection. It is said in the sutras: The twenty high peaks of the mountain of the view of the perishable collection were destroyed by the wisdom vajra, and the fruit of entering the stream was manifested. Therefore, the mountain of the view of the perishable collection, which has not been struck by the wisdom vajra of the noble ones, increases the rocks of afflictions day by day, arises from beginningless samsara, so it is tall in the three realms, and covers all aspects in all directions.

The teachings. The highest peak that emerges from the golden ground of ignorance is these twenty (questions) mentioned above. Third, refuting the inexpressible self. First, stating the previous view: Some believe that the person (pudgala) is substantially existent, inexpressible as being both the same as and different from the aggregates, and inexpressible as being permanent and impermanent. They consider it to be the object of the six consciousnesses and also the basis for clinging to a self. Some, revered by many noble ones, argue that the person should not be something other than the aggregates, because without the aggregates, the clinging to a person cannot be established. But it is also not the nature of the aggregates, because this would lead to arising and ceasing. Therefore, it is inexpressible as being either the same as or different from the aggregates. Just as it is inexpressible as being the same or different, it also cannot be said to be permanent or impermanent, because this would fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation. The person should be substantially existent, because it can be called the agent and the enjoyer, and because it is related to samsara, nirvana, bondage, and liberation. This person is not knowable by its own nature, but it is known by making the six sense sources, such as form, the object of consciousness. Therefore, it is also the object of the six consciousnesses and is considered to be the basis or object for clinging to a self. Refuting it is divided into two parts: the main part and the conclusion. The first part is further divided into three points: if it is established as substantially existent, it is not inexpressible; if it is said to be inexpressible, then it is nominally existent; explaining that because it lacks the characteristics of a real entity, the self cannot be established. The first point is: Because what is substantially existent is not inexpressible, just as form is not inexpressible from mind. Similarly, if some self is established as substantially existent, it will not be inexpressible as being the same as or different from form, etc., like the mind. The second point: Just as the substantial entity of a pot is inexpressible from form, etc., and therefore becomes without inherent existence. If the self also becomes inexpressible from the aggregates, then it will be mistakenly thought to be inherently existent.
