Therefore, the Muni said in the Sutra: "Great King, a great man, a person, is the six elements, the six sources of contact, and the eighteen mental activities." Thus, the self is shown in dependence on the six elements, such as earth and water, and the six bases of contact, from the contact of the eye to the contact of the mind. And based on the six objects such as form, there are six kinds of pleasant mental activities, six kinds of unpleasant mental activities, and six kinds of neutral mental activities, totaling eighteen mental activities. And by taking the mind and mental phenomena as close, it is designated as self. Because it is clearly stated in the sutras that the self is designated through the door of the six elements, etc., therefore, the self is neither those dharmas nor different from them, nor even a mere collection of them. Because the dharmas mentioned above cannot be taken as the self, one should not cling to those dharmas as self. Thus, the aggregates are not the object of self-grasping, nor are they different from the aggregates. Therefore, since there is no object of self-grasping, the yogi does not perceive the self, and also knows that what belongs to the self is not substantial. Having eliminated all conditioned phenomena, one will pass into nirvana without taking anything. Therefore, it is most excellent to analyze that there is no self, either identical to or different from the aggregates. Fourth, refuting the fault of not abandoning the view of self: When one realizes no-self, one abandons the permanent self, and this is not desired as the basis of self-grasping. Therefore, it is very strange to say that knowing no-self can also eradicate the view of self. When a yogi realizes no-self, at that time, he abandons the permanent self by realizing the emptiness of the permanent self apart from the aggregates. Such a self is not desired by worldly people as the basis or object of self-grasping, but they want to take the aggregates as the object of self-grasping. Therefore, it is very strange to say that seeing the emptiness of the permanent self apart from the aggregates can also eradicate the seed of the view of self that takes the aggregates as the object, because the two are not related to each other. To clarify this with an analogy, it is said: Seeing a snake in a hole in one's own wall.

Here, dispelling the doubt that "there is no elephant here," and also abandoning the fear of snakes, alas! It becomes a laughingstock for others. For example, someone sees a snake coiled in the cracks of their own house wall, but says, "There is no elephant here," thereby dispelling the doubt about snakes and abandoning the fear of snakes. This action is ridiculed by other knowledgeable people and becomes a laughingstock. Why? Because the absence of an elephant cannot eliminate the fear of snakes. Similarly, those who claim the aggregates and consciousness as self are also like this. Because there is no permanent self, they cannot eliminate the ego-grasping that takes the aggregates as its object. Therefore, this cycle of existence will not cease. Conclusion of Refutation. Secondly, the conclusion of refutation has three parts. First, the refutation of the dependent and the depended upon: "The self is not in the aggregates, nor are those aggregates in the self. Why? If there were otherness, then a distinction would arise here. But that otherness does not exist, therefore here it is just a distinction." The self does not exist in the aggregates in a dependent manner, nor do the aggregates exist in the self in a dependent manner. Why? If there were otherness, like a pillar and a trough, or yogurt, then the distinction between the dependent and the depended upon would arise here. But the aggregates and the self have no otherness, therefore the distinction between the dependent and the depended upon is merely a conceptual construct. Second, the refutation of possessing qualities and being qualified: "The self is not associated with form, etc., because there is no such thing. The meaning of association is not connected, because 'having' and 'having form' imply otherness or non-otherness. Since the self's form is not different from it, there is no otherness." The self is not associated with form, etc., the aggregates. Thus, the word "associated," as in "Devadatta has a cow," is used to express association with otherness. As in "Devadatta has form," it is used to express association with non-otherness. However, as previously stated, the self and form, etc., have neither thatness nor otherness, so there is no meaning in connecting the word "associated." Third, showing the categories of the view of the perishable collection: "Form is not the self, the self is not possessed of form, there is no self in form, there is no form in the self. Thus, all four aspects of the aggregates should be known. These are designated as twenty views of self."
