It is not a protector, not a tamer, nor a witness. Because without it, it is not an aggregate. The Blessed One said: "Oneself is one's own protector, Oneself is also one's own enemy. When doing good and evil, Oneself is one's own witness." Thus, it is said that oneself is the protector and the witness. "By taming oneself well, The wise will attain higher realms." Thus, it is also said to tame. Because the aggregate itself is not real, it is not a protector, nor a tamer, nor a witness. Therefore, the aggregate is not self. Furthermore, when those aggregates of limbs exist, they become a chariot, and the chariot is the same as the self. As it is said in the sutra: "I, is the mind of Mara, You have become a view. This aggregate of formations is empty, There is no sentient being in it. Just as all the collections of limbs, Depending on this, it is called a chariot. Likewise, depending on the aggregates, Conventionally called a sentient being." Thus, it is said that the chariot is the same as the self. Therefore, when the aggregate of the skandhas is the self, the nails and so on, which exist as the aggregate of limbs of that chariot, will become the chariot. That is unreasonable, because the aggregate of limbs will become the chariot. Therefore, the sutra says that it depends on the skandhas, so the aggregate of skandhas is not the self. The sutra says that depending on the skandhas, it is nominally designated as the self, therefore the aggregate of skandhas is not the self. For example, depending on the elements such as earth, blue and so on are nominally designated, as well as things born from the eye and so on, but they are not merely the aggregate of elements. If the aggregate of wheels and so on is not a chariot, however, when the wheels and so on have a special shape, the name of the chariot will be obtained. Similarly, is the shape of the arrangement of forms and so on the self, but not merely the aggregate? That is also not the case, because, if it is said to be a shape, it is because it exists in colored objects, do you think that those themselves are the self?

The nature of the aggregates such as form is not self, because they have no shape. If the difference of shape were self, then shape exists in things with form. You would then think that those things with form themselves are the self, but the nature of the aggregates of the four skandhas such as mind is not self, because they have no shape, because they are not things with form. Furthermore, the taker and the taken object cannot be one, because that would lead to action and agent being one. The taker, the self, and the objects to be taken cannot be one, because that would lead to action and agent being one, which is not desirable. Because the forms produced by the great elements, as well as the pot and the potter, would also become one. As it is said in the scriptures: "If the wood is the fire, the agent and the action will become one." It also says: "The nature of fire and wood, and the order of what is taken, together with the pot, blanket, etc., have all been explained in detail." If one thinks that there can be action without an agent, then the taker who becomes the agent does not exist at all, but only the aggregate of the objects to be taken, such as form, which has become the action, exists, this is not so. Because there is no action without an agent. This is not so, because without an agent there is no cause, so there is no action either. Therefore, where it is said, "The agent is not seen, but action exists, and so does maturation," one should know that there the true agent is negated. The agent who is dependently imputed, who is a part of conventional expression, is not negated, as it is widely said in the scriptures, "The person associated with ignorance also accumulates merit, and is also accumulating," etc. Third, showing dependent imputation: Because the Muni (Buddha) said that the self is the six elements, namely earth, water, fire, wind, consciousness, and space, and the six sense bases such as the eye, and based on these he showed it, grasping the mind and mental factors, thereby definitively declaring it. Therefore, it is not those, nor is it merely the aggregate, therefore, it is unreasonable to generate self-grasping towards those. What
