If the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我) is of the nature of the aggregates, then when the aggregates are extinguished without remainder in nirvana, all five aggregates will be completely cut off, and the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我) will also be cut off. If that is the case, then holding to the extreme of annihilation will lead to falling into extreme views. Because you posit holding to extremes by clinging to what is held as the self as something that is either permanent or annihilated. In the moments before entering nirvana, just as the aggregates arise and perish moment by moment, so too should the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我) arise and perish, because the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我) is of the nature of the aggregates. Therefore, it would be inconsistent with the sutra that says, "At that time, at that moment, I was a king named I-lasa-nu," because at that time the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我) would also be destroyed like the body, and here the arising of another body is accepted. The treatise also says: "The appropriated is not the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我). It is something that arises and perishes. How can the appropriated be the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我)?" Likewise, it is said: "If the aggregates are the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我), then they are subject to arising and perishing." If the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我) arises and perishes, then in future lives, the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我) that previously performed actions will have ceased to exist. Because there is no basis for action, there will be no action, and therefore no result of action. If the result of an action performed in a previous moment is experienced in subsequent moments, then the ripening of karma accumulated by others will be experienced by others, meaning that others will eat the karma accumulated by others. Therefore, actions will be wasted and one will encounter what has not been done. As the treatise says: "If this changes into another, then it will also arise without being. Likewise, the place changes, and it is born without dying. Annihilation and actions will be wasted, and the actions done by others will be experienced separately by others, and so on." Therefore, it is not reasonable to say that the aggregates are the self (Sanskrit: ātman, Romanized Sanskrit: atman, Tibetan: བདག་, literal Chinese meaning: 我). If the previous and subsequent moments are different, but because they are of the same continuum, it will not be the case that what is accumulated by one is experienced by another, is it? Because it is of the same continuum.

If it is said that there is no such fault, then the fault has already been stated regarding the single continuum. Because the fault has already been stated in "The continuum is single from moment to moment, and all phenomena depend on Maitreya's near covering," it is unreasonable. It is also said in the scriptures: "If gods and humans are different, then there will be impermanent change. If gods and humans are different, then the continuum will not be reasonable." As it is said, it is unreasonable to assign things with mutually different characteristics to a single continuum, so the fault cannot be avoided. Therefore, the aggregates and the mind are not self. Therefore, it should be said that the aggregates are not self, and the mind is not self. Furthermore, because there is no world with an end, etc. Here, all schools consider the fourteen unstated objects to be as follows: four regarding whether the world has an end or not, four regarding whether the world is permanent or impermanent, four regarding whether the Tathagata exists or does not exist after death, and two based on whether the body and life are the same or different. These fourteen are not to be expressed definitively, so the Blessed One has established them as unstated objects. Among them, if the aggregates are held by the term "world" or "self," then due to the arising and ceasing of the aggregates, it would also become a statement that the world is impermanent. And, since there are no aggregates after Nirvana, it would also become a statement that the world has an end. Similarly, it would also become a statement that the Tathagata does not exist after death. Therefore, since it is believed that there is no world with an end, etc., it is unreasonable to say that the aggregates and the mind are self. Furthermore, if the aggregates or the mind are self, then when you, the yogi, see no-self, at that time, things will certainly become nonexistent. According to your view, when the yogi sees the truth, seeing that all phenomena are without self, at that time, it will become the realization that form and other things do not exist, because form and other aggregates are only self, and because of realizing no-self. This is also what is believed.
