Therefore, it is for the purpose of observing the difference between self and what belongs to self. If those who do not understand the difference between permanence and non-origination, etc., also have attachment to self with that as its object due to being accustomed to previous lives, etc., if you think so, that is not the case either. Like this: Those beings who have spent many eons in the animal realm, they have not seen this unborn and permanent self, but attachment to self is also seen in them, therefore, which wise person would cling to such a self as the basis of attachment to self? Therefore, there is no permanent self that is different from the aggregates. Secondly, refuting the self as being one with the aggregates, first stating the previous view: Because there is no self other than the aggregates, therefore, the object of the view of self is only the aggregates. Those who are respected by many of their own schools say: As it is said, because there is no self that is different from the aggregates, therefore, the object of the view of self is only the aggregates, therefore, what is called self is nothing else, it is only the aggregates. Moreover, some people think that the aggregates, as the basis of the view of self, are all five aggregates, and some think it is one mind. Some people think that the self, which is the basis or object of the view of self, is all five aggregates, such as form, etc., just as the Blessed One said: Monks, any renunciant or Brahmin who correctly observes what is self, they are only correctly observing these five aggregates of grasping. Some people think that only one mind is the self that is the object of the view of self, because it is said in the sutra: One's own self is one's own protector, who else can be a protector? By taming oneself well, the wise will attain heaven. Because the sutra refers to the mind with the word self. How is that known? Separated from the aggregates

Because of the selflessness of the object to be tamed, and because it is said in other sutras to tame the mind, it is said: Taming the mind is good, taming the mind brings happiness. Thus it is said. There are two refutations to this: the actual refutation and the conclusion of the refutation. The first part also includes: stating the harm, refuting the proof, showing that it is imputed based on dependence, and the fault of not abandoning self-view. The first part is: If the aggregates are the self, then because of that, because of the many, that self also becomes many. The self becomes a substance, and looking there, because of clinging to substance, it will not be inverted. If the aggregates are the self, then because of that, the aggregates have many forms due to the differences of form, etc., therefore the self also becomes many. According to which view, the mind is the self, according to that view, also because of the differences of eye consciousness, etc., or because consciousness arises and ceases in each moment, the self also becomes many. As it is said: When the world arises, only one person arises. From this scriptural statement, it is not accepted that the self is many. Form and feeling, etc., substances that become different due to the differences of past, etc., are called aggregates, and because only the aggregates are imputed as the self, the self becomes established as a substance, then, monks, these five are only names, only designations, only establishments, which five? Namely: past time, future time, space, nirvana, and person. Similarly, just as relying on the collection of limbs, it is called a chariot, similarly relying on the aggregates, it is called a conventional sentient being. From this, it is not accepted either. If the self exists as a substance, the self-view that has the characteristic of looking at the self, because it clings to the object of substance existence, just like blue and yellow consciousness, the clinging will not become inverted, therefore, the view of the collection of aggregates cannot be abandoned in a way that it does not arise, and it will also be abandoned in the way of abandoning desire, like the eyes, etc. Furthermore, at the time of nirvana, it will definitely become the annihilation of the self. In the moments before nirvana, because there is no creator of arising and ceasing, there is no result. What is accumulated by others is enjoyed by others.
