Numbers. From the Great arises ego. That has three aspects: transformative, energetic, and dark. From the first arise the five tanmatras: form, sound, smell, taste, and touch. From the five tanmatras arise the five great elements: earth, water, fire, wind, and space. From the second ego arise the five organs of action: speech, hands, feet, anus, and genitals, and the five organs of intellect: eye, ear, nose, tongue, and skin, and the mind, which is the nature of both. Thus, eleven arise. The dark ego is the object of both egos. The Samkhyas acknowledge this in this way. Similarly, depending on slight differences in that self, the tenets of the self of the non-Buddhists become different. For example, the Vaisheshikas say that intelligence, pleasure, pain, desire, hatred, effort, dharma, non-dharma, and the force of combination are the nine qualities of the self. Among these, as long as the nine qualities of the self gather and exist in the self, it is called samsara because of performing virtuous and non-virtuous actions. When the self, such as the independence of the person, is realized as suffering, and when the qualities of the self, such as knowledge, are cut off with their roots, that self will become an isolated state without qualities, and therefore it is called liberation. Thus, in the Madhyamaka-hrdaya, it is also said: "The qualities of the self, such as knowledge, are cut off. The yogi who has uprooted them, the self that exists in the mind, know that to be the liberation of the Vaisheshikas." As it is said. That self is of the nature of non-abandonment, permanent, the agent, the enjoyer of ripening, possessing qualities in the state of samsara, and because it pervades like space, it is also said to be without action. Some say that it has the action of contraction and extension. Those who speak of the Vedas say that like the space inside different containers such as pots, one self becomes many because of different bodies. Second, to refute them, there are three aspects: refuting the nature of the self, refuting the distinctions, and showing that it is not the basis of ego-grasping.

Firstly, because like the son of a barren woman, it is separate from being born. Therefore, such a self does not exist. This should not be the basis of self-grasping either. This should not be desired to exist even in conventional truth. As previously stated, the self that is permanent and an enjoyer, etc., does not exist, because it is separate from being born, like the son of a barren woman. Therefore, this son-like self should not be the basis or object of self-grasping for worldly beings, because it is unborn. This does not exist in reality, and not only should it not be the object of self-grasping, but it should not be desired to exist even in conventional truth, because such a thing is not perceived. Secondly, refuting distinctions: Because whatever distinctions of the self are taught in the treatises of the non-Buddhists, all of those are harmed by the reason of being unborn, which is known to oneself. Therefore, all those distinctions of the self do not exist. Because whatever distinctions of the self, such as being permanent and an enjoyer, etc., are taught in the treatises of the Samkhyas and Vaisheshikas, etc., all of those do not exist, because they are unborn. Like the son of a barren woman, they are harmed by the reason of being unborn, which is known to oneself. Therefore, all distinctions of the self do not exist. In short, the self is not permanent, an enjoyer, etc., because it is unborn, like the son of a barren woman. Therefore, there is no self other than the skandhas, because grasping it apart from the skandhas is not established. Because it is so, therefore, there is no self that is distinct from the skandhas and distinguished by permanence, etc. If it existed, it would be grasped as distinct from the skandhas, like consciousness separate from form. Because grasping the self distinguished by permanence, etc., apart from the skandhas is not established. Thirdly, showing that it is not the basis of self-grasping: Not only is there no self that is different from the skandhas, but it should not be the basis of the worldly self-grasping mind either, because even those who do not know also cling to the view of self. The self distinguished by permanence, etc., should not be the basis or object of the innate self-grasping mind of worldly beings, because even children who do not recognize the self as distinguished by permanence, etc., clearly cling to the view of self.
