It is because of the thorough division by different views. Thus, those who possess the pure higher training in discipline are the eighteen schools, and those who possess the higher training in wisdom are the four philosophical schools. Therefore, those schools that assert the existence of a person (pudgala), because they have not abandoned the higher training in discipline, are nominally included in the teachings of the Buddha, but because they have abandoned the higher training in wisdom, they are also truly external to the teachings. The explanations of the intention of the Great Vehicle's pitaka are also of two kinds: the Madhyamaka and the mere representation-only (Vijñānavāda). The first is that, after the Blessed One passed into nirvana for more than a hundred years, due to the power of the actions of the demons, the schools split into different factions. They became chaotic with different and incompatible views, and everyone's mind was distracted by emptiness, and they became holders of views that manifestly clung to entities. As it says in the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra: "Great wisdom, you should know that after my nirvana, those who hold to phenomena, in the southern country of Vidarbha, there will be a monk known as Glorious, whose name is Nāga, who will destroy the sides of existence and non-existence. In my teachings in the world, he will mainly teach the unsurpassed vehicle, and having accomplished the Joyful Ground, he will go to Sukhavati." The great being, the noble Nāgārjuna, who was prophesied in this way, appeared four hundred years after the Teacher passed into nirvana. From the land of the nāgas and so on, he invited many Great Vehicle sutras, such as the Prajñāpāramitā, and composed treatises that explain the intention of all the teachings of the Thus-Gone One as the profound Middle Way of dependent arising, such as the Fundamental Wisdom of the Middle Way (Mūlamadhyamakakārikā). He eliminated all extremes of superimposition and denigration, and made clear in the world the single path of all the Thus-Gone Ones, the heart essence of the mind, the way of the great Middle Way free from extremes. The Teacher's texts also abide in two parts: explanations of the profound view and explanations of the vast conduct. The first also has two parts: texts that cut off superimpositions through hearing and thinking, and instructions for taking them into experience through meditation.
