It is said that Nāgārjuna gathered from those scriptures and spread them widely in the human world. As for when the fundamental compilation of the Mahāyāna scriptures occurred, and where it was compiled, it seems difficult to know because no reliable and clear scriptural evidence has been seen. Thus, the account of how the Buddha's scriptures were compiled has been briefly explained. Next, I will briefly discuss how the great chariot masters explained the meaning of those compiled scriptures. There are two types of explanations: those of the Hīnayāna and those of the Mahāyāna scriptures. Among the first, there are two: the Vaibhāṣika and the Sautrāntika. The first, the earliest treatises of the Vaibhāṣika school, are the seven Abhidharma treatises, such as the Jñānaprasthāna, and the Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra, etc. The seven Abhidharma treatises are sūtras, and the Vaibhāṣikas believe that they were compiled by the venerable Śāriputra and others while the Blessed One was alive. However, the Sautrāntikas do not consider those to be sūtras, so they are clearly treatises, and the authors are also clearly not venerable ones, because there are contradictions with the sūtras. Regarding the Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra, some believe that it was composed by the venerable Ghoṣaka and Vasumitra, etc., but it is clear that it was not composed by venerable ones, because there are many errors regarding reality. Therefore, the Abhidharma master Vasubandhu seems to believe that the treatises of the Vaibhāṣika school were also composed after the second compilation by ordinary people who had not seen Suchness. Because he said in the commentary to the Abhidharmakośa: "The teacher, the eye of the world, has closed, the witnesses have mostly passed away, those who have not seen Suchness wander at will, and evil discriminators corrupt this teaching." The Vaibhāṣika school is also divided into two due to regional differences: the Western School and the Kashmir School. Due to differences in views, they are divided into four: those who assert that things change, those who assert that characteristics change, those who assert that states change, and those who assert that different and different changes. The teachers are Vasumitra, Dharmatrāta, Buddhadeva, Ghoṣaka, etc. The teachers Guṇaprabha and Śākyaprabha also

They appear as teachers of the Vaibhashika school. The treatises are also the various treatises composed by those teachers, such as the Abhidharmakosha. Because they excel and delight in specifically explaining the scriptures, they are called Vaibhashikas. The time of the emergence of the Sautrantika school also appears to be the same as that of the Vaibhashikas. They do not follow the seven Abhidharma texts and the Vaibhashika, etc., but follow the Sutras and establish their own system, so they are called Sautrantikas. The teachers are Kumarata, Shrirata, and Bhikshu Rata, etc. The Sautrantika texts do not have independent translations, and most of their views come from the autocommentary of the Abhidharmakosha and the Pramanavarttika, etc. If someone asks: Are all the eighteen schools mentioned earlier included in these two schools? Although it is said to be certain in the commentary on the Sandhinirmocana Sutra, in the Tarka-jvala, it is said that the Vatsiputriyas, the Bhadrayanikas, the Sammatīyas, the Dharmaguptakas, and the Theravadins assert an inexpressible person, so it is clear that these schools are not included in these two schools, because both of these schools assert no-self. In that case, if it is said, "The Buddha's teachings are of four kinds, seen first by those who desire, the path of the Vaibhashikas, etc., is established by explaining it," this contradicts the statement that the Sugata's schools are divided into four kinds. Answer: There is no fault. Those who assert self have become external to the Buddha's teachings, because the Buddha's teachings are distinguished by teaching no-self. Therefore, they are not proclaimers of the Tathagata's school. Then, how are all the schools included in the Tathagata's teachings? The Tathagata's teachings are distinguished by pure morality and pure view. Therefore, all eighteen schools are included in the Buddha's teachings because they have not abandoned the training of higher morality. And those among them who do not possess pure view are not proclaimers of the Sugata's school, because the tenets are different.
