will also be surpassed and examined. Therefore, if forms and so on are without inherent existence, it is unreasonable to say that they are the same as the son of a barren woman in terms of existence or non-existence. Furthermore, even though they are unborn in reality, why do they not become objects of sight in the world, like the son of a barren woman? Therefore, this statement is uncertain. As it is said in the sutra: "Beings are described as being like dreams. In them, there is no substance. In dreams, there are no things, yet those with wrong views are attached to them. Although a city of gandharvas appears, the city is not in the ten directions, nor is it elsewhere. The city is merely a name. Thus, the Sugata sees beings. Those with the perception of water see a mirage, but there is no water in it. Likewise, they are disturbed by complete conceptualization, and they perceive suffering in what is not suffering. In a mirror that is perfectly clear, how do reflections appear without inherent existence? Likewise, know the trees and all phenomena." The sutra also says that even though forms and so on are unborn in reality, they do not become visible objects in the world in conventional terms, like the son of a barren woman. Therefore, if things do not exist in reality, they should also be like the son of a barren woman in conventional terms. This statement is uncertain for you yourself. Thus, the first two verses show uncertainty through an example known to oneself, and the last shows uncertainty through scripture. Therefore, for the Madhyamika, it is impossible to surpass and examine in the way described above. Because we admit that forms and so on are inherently born in conventional truth, but we do not negate them in ultimate truth. So what is it? Like the son of a barren woman, birth by its own nature does not exist in reality or in the world. Likewise, all the essence of these things is not born in the world in that very nature. Just as the son of a barren woman does not exist by his own nature in both reality and worldly convention, so too, all the essence of these things, such as forms, is unborn in both worldly convention and reality.

Therefore, the so-called "birth" refers not to being dependent on consciousness, but to the birth of its own characteristics. Why is it so? Therefore, it is declared as follows: All phenomena are inherently peaceful, by nature free from birth, and have been said to be completely extinguished. Therefore, constant birth does not exist. As it is said in the sutra: When turning the wheel of Dharma, the phenomena that are inherently peaceful and unborn, whose nature is extinguished, have been taught by you, the protector. Thus, the Blessed One has spoken, and therefore, constant birth does not exist for all things. Among them, because wisdom is the realm of peace, all phenomena are peaceful. Why is that? Because their own essence is unborn. The reason for this is also because their nature is extinguished. The so-called "from the beginning" means that it is not only unborn in the state of yogic wisdom, but also in the state of worldly convention before that, phenomena are also unborn by nature. Thus, at the time of turning the wheel of Dharma, you have taught the phenomena, and in a way that praises the excellence of virtues, the Bodhisattva Sarvanivaranaviskambhin praises the Blessed One. Furthermore, the Sautrantikas and the Vaibhashikas of their own schools believe that if things do not exist in ultimate reality, then they do not exist in conventional reality either, and should not be refuted and examined, because there are famous examples in their own tenets. For example: These pots and so on do not exist in reality, but exist as they are commonly known in the world. Similarly, because all things change, it will not lead to being the same as the child of a barren woman. According to your own view, pots and forests, etc., are merely imputed, so they do not exist in reality, but exist as they are commonly known in the world. Similarly, all things such as form also change in this way, so even if they do not exist in ultimate reality, it will not lead to being completely non-existent in conventional reality like the child of a barren woman. If it is said that because there are real things such as earth and water that serve as the basis for imputing a pot, it is reasonable to impute it as a pot, then according to the view that all dharmas are merely imputed,
