If all things were to arise without a cause, then all causes and non-causes would constantly produce all effects and non-effects. For example, just as the fruits of Panasa arise from seeds that are not their cause, so too would mangoes and the like arise from them because they are non-causes, since they are similar in being non-causes. Similarly, the ripening of mangoes and the like, which depends on the difference of time, would also become constantly existent, because it does not depend on time. If that were the case, all beings would arise in all times and places, which is also impossible. This is not only contrary to reason but also contrary to what is seen. If things were to arise only without a cause, then these worldly people would not gather and strive with hundreds of difficulties for the causes such as seeds to accomplish fruits such as fruits and grains. Since they do so, the arising of things is not from their own nature. Furthermore, if beings were devoid of cause, like in the sky, the scent and color of an Utpala (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) could not be perceived. Since it is possible to grasp the extremely bright world, therefore, one should know that the world arises from causes, just as one's own mind intends. If beings were all without cause, just as the scent and color of an Utpala (Tibetan, Sanskrit Devanagari, Sanskrit Romanization, Chinese literal meaning) in the sky cannot be seen, so too would they be impossible to be grasped by their respective object-cognizing consciousnesses. Since these inner and outer worlds are also observed to be grasped by their respective object-cognizing consciousnesses, therefore, just as the minds that appear as blue and so on to the Tirthikas do not arise without blue and so on, but arise from them, so too should one know that these inner and outer worlds arise from their respective causes. Secondly, refuting the specific view that there is no other world. Those who assert that the elements are the cause say: "Mind and mental factors arise from the transformation of the elements, and we cannot deny their cause, as we have seen it, because we have seen it and because we would incur the faults as previously stated." Therefore, inner and outer things

The cause of producing everything is four: earth, water, fire, and wind. From the distinction of these fully matured, the colors and shapes of lotuses and cotton, etc., as well as peacocks and wild ducks, etc., and the various forms that are seen, not only arise from the elements, but also the very objects of mind that completely cut off various things also arise from them. For example, just as the ability to intoxicate beings arises from the complete maturation of the distinction of the elements mixed with alcohol and malt, etc., so too, mind arises from the complete maturation of the distinction of the elements such as the viscous substances of semen and blood, and it also becomes the means of completely cutting off all things. Therefore, external and internal things are merely produced from the cause of the four elements, and where would there be the maturation of virtuous or non-virtuous actions, or the next life that matures in another world? They say this. To this it must be said: How do you know that there is no next life? If you say: Because the next life is not directly perceived. Then, is the very fact that the next life is not directly perceived directly perceived, or is it not directly perceived? If you say it is directly perceived, then, because the next life is not directly perceived, it becomes an object because it is directly perceived, and in that case, nothing would not exist, and because there is no opposite, objects would also not exist, therefore, the statement that the elements exist and the next life does not exist collapses. If you say it is not directly perceived, then, because it is not apprehended by anything, how can one infer from it that there is no next life? If you say that it is apprehended from inference, that is also not accepted, because it has been promised: Whatever is the object of the senses, a person is only that much; whatever the virtuous and learned woman says, is like the tracks of a jackal. Therefore, this defamation of everything is not reasonable. Furthermore, those elements, what nature of them becomes the object of your mind, is it not possessed of a lord? Whoever has such thick darkness of mind, how can he
