If that were the case, according to the literal meaning, it would be no different from the "self" spoken of by the heretics. If it was spoken with a hidden meaning, then what is the hidden meaning and what is the necessity? This is the questioner's thought. This is not a literal meaning, but has a hidden meaning. The basis of the hidden meaning is emptiness, signlessness, and so on. The necessity is to gradually guide those beings who are accustomed to heretical views and are not suitable as vessels for profound teachings towards selflessness. This is the meaning of the answer. In this way, the Tathagatagarbha, which is directly understood through language, cannot even be established in name, because it is similar to the "self" of the heretics. The Tathagatagarbha of hidden meaning is the Dharmadhatu itself, which is indicated by names such as emptiness and signlessness. Therefore, even in name, it is free from all elaborations of characteristics. It cannot be expressed in any way as existence, non-existence, permanence, impermanence, etc. However, those who are deluded by the poison indicated by bad spiritual friends, and whose eyes of wisdom are blinded, take the profound sutras spoken by the Bhagavan according to the hidden meaning, and understand them according to the literal meaning, using the Tathagatagarbha as a guise, and proclaiming the permanent and pervasive "self". They themselves are also in the wrong path, and lead others into the wrong path. They praise those who have entered the wrong path and rejoice because they are in agreement with each other. Those who truly speak of the essence of the Tathagata's teachings—selflessness and emptiness—are attacked by them with direct words, taken out of context, and slandered as nihilists. Nowadays, they have defiled this Buddhism of the snowy land (referring to Tibet), which is like a flame about to be extinguished, with evil views. Second, establishing by reasoning: If there is no object of knowledge, then the removal of knowledge is easily attained, so say the Buddhas. If there is no object of knowledge, then the negation of knowledge is established, therefore, the first is to negate the object of knowledge. If there is no object of knowledge, then the knowledge that possesses the object can be easily eliminated, because the object and the possessor of the object are established in dependence on each other. Therefore, the Tathagatas, in order to tame

Because it is intended to gradually lead beings into the state of no-self, in the beginning, it is merely: "Do external appearances exist or not?" and so on, refuting the knowable. Because for the no-self of the knowable, those sentient beings can easily enter into the refutation of the knower. Moreover, like this, for the no-self of the knowable, sentient beings sometimes realize by themselves that the knower is without inherent nature, and sometimes they can realize it with a little hint. Third, the difference between the provisional and the definitive is shown: Thus, having understood the history of the scriptures, whichever sutra does not directly explain the suchness ultimate truth characterized by dependent arising and non-arising, but directly explains the conventional truth, if it can be guided to the meaning of emptiness, then those are merely spoken as a means to enter into no-self, therefore they are provisional. Also, understand what their intention is, and then guide and explain it into a meaning that does not contradict it. Whichever sutra directly explains emptiness and non-arising, etc., the meaning of those sutras cannot be guided in other ways, therefore it should be known as definitive. The difference between the provisional and the definitive is like this, and also, in the noble *Samadhiraja Sutra* it says: "The emptiness Dharma spoken by the Tathagata, the definitive sutra section should be well known, whichever sutra speaks of sentient beings, those are all spoken for the provisional." Similarly, in the noble *Inexhaustible Intelligence Sutra* it also says: "What is the provisional sutra? All the sutras that speak of the conventional truth are provisional. What is the definitive sutra? All the sutras that are spoken for the sake of manifesting the ultimate truth are definitive. All the sutras that speak of various words and letters are provisional. All the sutras that are profound, difficult to see, and difficult to understand
