Napa. Explaining its arguments, and incidentally explaining the difference between provisional and definitive meanings. First, which sutra does not acknowledge the existence of external objects? The intention of what is said, "The nature of mind manifests various appearances," is that for those who are particularly attached to form, inverting form, that is also provisional. In sutras such as the Lankavatara Sutra, where does the appearance of external objects exist or not? Etc., it is not said that external objects exist, but that the nature of mind manifests as various appearances such as body and enjoyment. The intention of what is said is: For those beings who are particularly attached to form, the afflictions caused by it, such as desire, arise involuntarily, and based on that, they commit great evils, thus falling away from the accumulation of merit and wisdom. For these people, the Bhagavan, in order to destroy the afflictions caused by form, just as he taught those with attachment to meditate on skeletons, although not completely true, it should be understood that form is inverted and declared as mind-only. Therefore, that sutra is also provisional. If asked, how do you know that this is also provisional, and not definitive? Second, explaining the arguments, divided into scriptural and logical proofs. First: This is the provisional meaning spoken by the teacher, and this is also suitable as provisional by reason. Not only is this sutra provisional, but other similar sutras are also clearly shown to be provisional by this scriptural proof. For those who consider mind-only to be the ultimate meaning, in the Holy Samdhinirmocana Sutra, etc., regarding the three natures of parikalpita, paratantra, and parinispanna, it says, "There is no parikalpita, paratantra exists," similarly, "The grasping consciousness is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a stream of water, one should not grasp at self," I have not taught this to children. Etc., other similar sutras also say: Just as a doctor gives various medicines to a patient, the Buddha also skillfully taught mind-only to sentient beings. This scriptural proof clearly shows that the existence or non-existence of external objects, etc., is provisional. Just as doctors give different medicines due to the different types of illnesses of patients.

As it is said. The Tathagata's teaching of Mind-Only is also to show that it depends on the different thoughts of the beings to be tamed. If the teaching of Mind-Only is the definitive meaning, then it is unreasonable to say that the need for it is to teach Mind-Only again depending on the different thoughts of the beings to be tamed. Similarly, in the Lankavatara Sutra, the Blessed One said that the essence of the Tathagata is spoken of in the sutra, and the Blessed One said that the naturally luminous and pure, originally pure, possessing the thirty-two marks, exists in the bodies of all sentient beings. Like the Blessed One's precious jewel wrapped in a dirty cloth, wrapped in the cloth of the aggregates, elements, and sources, suppressed by desire, hatred, and ignorance, defiled by the thoughts of discrimination, if it is said to be permanent, constant, and stable, then Blessed One, the Tathagata speaks of the Tathagata-garbha, how is this different from the self spoken of by the heretics? Blessed One, the heretics also say that the self is permanent, the agent, without merit, pervasive, and indestructible. The Blessed One said: Great Wisdom, the teaching of the Tathagata-garbha is not the same as that of the heretics. Great Wisdom, the Tathagatas, Arhats, perfectly enlightened Buddhas, in order to have children abandon the places where they will be destroyed by selflessness, the meaning of words such as emptiness, the limit of Suchness, Nirvana, non-arising, non-ceasing, signlessness, wishlessness, etc., are taught as the Tathagata-garbha, and the place of non-discrimination, the realm of no appearance, is shown through the way of the Tathagata-garbha. Great Wisdom, future and present Bodhisattvas and Mahasattvas should not be attached to self. Great Wisdom, for example, a potter uses a lump of clay, with his hands, tools, molds, water, and

Just like a son, diligent and complete, thus making various kinds of vessels. O wise one, likewise, the Tathagatas, through understanding the selflessness of all dharmas, all inversions, that is, wisdom and skillful means, and by possessing various methods, teach the Tathagatagarbha, or it is also acceptable to teach selflessness, just like a potter, they reveal it through various terms of words and letters. Therefore, O wise one, teaching the Tathagatagarbha is different from the way non-Buddhists speak of the self. O wise one, thus, the Tathagatas, in order to guide those who are attached to the non-Buddhist self-theory, teach the Tathagatagarbha, and how can those with the intention of falling into the view of discriminating a true self, possess the intention of abiding in the realm of the three doors of liberation, and quickly attain the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment? etc. The consciousness of grasping is deep and subtle, all seeds flow like a river, it is not reasonable to grasp it as a self, this I have not taught to children. Declaring these sutras as definitive meaning. The summarized meaning here is twofold, namely, the Bodhisattva asks the question, and the Tathagata answers. The first, from "Bhagavan" to "speak of self." The second is also divided into two types: summary and detailed explanation. The first, from "Bhagavan" to "should not be attached." The second is also divided into two types: intention and necessity. The first is also divided into three types: metaphor, meaning, and conclusion. The first, from "For example" to "making various kinds." The second, from "O wise one" to "revealing in various ways." The third, from "Therefore" to "different." Necessity, from "O wise one" to the remaining parts. The summarized meaning here is that the Bhagavan spoke of the Tathagatagarbha.
