Nor is it completely cut off, so it will be remembered as if I had seen it. If it is remembered because it is not other, then will Devadatta's previous experience be remembered by the offering's present memory? Therefore, this is just the way of worldly terms, and it is not something that needs to be investigated very much, because worldly terms are all false in meaning. Therefore, even in worldly terms, the experience and memory of different streams are not called non-other, but one's own previous experience and later memory are not called other, because one would say, 'I experienced something like this before.' If it is not other but the same, why is it that one's own previous experience is called 'I experienced it,' but another's experience is not called that way? This is not something we should argue and investigate, but rather argue and investigate with the worldly person who says that. Furthermore, the Madhyamika does not want to establish that memory is some real thing, but only to refute those who argue that memory is unreasonable for the sake of establishing conventional truth. In this regard, if experience and memory are other objects, then memory would become unreasonable, just like the consciousness of different streams. Because it is not another object, it is shown that there is no unreasonableness in memory. According to the views of those who establish both experience and memory as real, because those are other entities, it is not reasonable for the former experience to be remembered by the latter memory, just like the consciousness of different streams. Nor is it established as one entity or as cause and effect, because it is different like the consciousness of different streams. Therefore, in the views of those people, memory is not reasonable, so conventional truth will be destroyed. For the Madhyamika, because experience and memory are not other, there is no unreasonableness in those not being different streams, nor in being cause and effect, etc. Therefore, if self-awareness does not exist, by whom will your otherness be grasped? The agent, the action, and the object are not one, so it is not reasonable for it to grasp itself. Because of the reasons stated above, self-awareness does not exist.

Since that is the case, if other consciousnesses do not grasp it either, by what object-possessing other-dependent will yours be grasped? Moreover, it is not reasonable for that consciousness itself to grasp it, for if that were so, the agent, the action, and the object would become one, which is also unreasonable. Just as we do not see the tree, the cutter, and the act of cutting as being the same. In the Holy Lankavatara Sutra, it is also said: 'Just as a sword does not cut its own edge, and a finger does not touch itself, so too is the self-aware mind.' Now, in order to show that it is too extreme to say that the nature of other-dependent exists, it is said: If the other-dependent, which is unborn and unknowable, and possesses a nature that is truly existent, what reason is there for not wanting it to exist? What harm has a prostitute's son caused you? The other-dependent self and those that are not born from others have already been established above. That which is not known by any object-possessor has just been pointed out. Therefore, if you admit that the other-dependent, which has the nature of being unborn and unknowable by anything, and is free from all elaboration, exists, then for what reason, even though it has the same nature as the other-dependent, do you not want it to exist? What harm has a prostitute's son caused you that you do not want it to exist? Therefore, you should also admit that there is something called a prostitute's son, which is free from all elaboration and has become the object of the wisdom of the noble ones. Second, refuting that it is the cause of the conventional. Having refuted the other-dependent in that way, because it is unbearable, it is said again: When the other-dependent does not exist even slightly, what will become the cause of the conventional truth? When, according to the reasoning stated above, the other-dependent does not exist, what will become the cause for establishing conventional truths such as persons and phenomena? Therefore, does it seem that all conventionalities have no cause at all? Because of attachment to the substance of the other-dependent, all the established conventions of the world are destroyed. Because of attachment to the substance of the other-dependent, the alaya-vijñana itself is the cause of all defiled and purified dharmas, so attachment to it destroys the causes known in the world from cowherds to
