Because it has been promised to be free from the distinction (of knower and known). Therefore, it is impossible for it to experience itself. Because it is contradictory for oneself to act on oneself. For example, just as the edge of a sword cannot cut itself, a finger cannot touch itself, fire cannot burn itself, and the eye cannot see itself. Here, to establish self-awareness, the reason for establishment is stated. If it is said that it is established from later recollection, then, just as a lamp from the moment it arises simultaneously illuminates both its own nature and objects such as a vase. Similarly, consciousnesses should also simultaneously illuminate their own nature and objects such as form. Therefore, self-awareness must be accepted, otherwise, later one would think, "I saw form," in this way, for the consciousness that experiences form, recollection will not arise, because recollection is the object of experience, and the consciousness that experiences form has no experiencer. Like this, because there is no self-awareness, it is also not reasonable for other consciousnesses to experience it. If the consciousness that appears blue is experienced by another consciousness that arises after the consciousness itself, then that consciousness is also experienced by other consciousnesses, and so on, thus it would become a fault of experiencers being transmitted endlessly. Therefore, later one would think, "I saw form," from the recollection of experiencing form, it is established that consciousness has an experiencer, and because other experiences are unreasonable, therefore self-awareness is established. If it is said that from self-awareness, otherness is established, this is also unreasonable. For example: In order to establish what is not established, through speech. This unestablished one cannot establish this. Regarding this, let us assume for a moment that the entity of self-awareness is established in ultimate truth, and then say that recollection is the establisher. In order to establish the self-awareness that is not established in ultimate truth, this recollection of speech is not its establisher, because like self-awareness, it is also not established in ultimate truth, because it does not arise from self and other, etc. If it is said that self-awareness is established in conventional truth and thus it is said, then, is it only said that recollection is the establisher? Or is it said that recollection has the cause of self-awareness? If it is the former, just as inferring a burning glass merely from fire, or inferring a crystal merely from water, it is uncertain. Because even without self-awareness,

Because it is established from below upwards. According to the second case, the self-cognition of consciousness in name is not established, because the world makes names by consciousness understanding the meaning. Therefore, in order to establish the self-cognition that is not established in name, the memory with the cause of self-cognition is not the establisher of self-cognition, because it is not established like self-cognition, just like establishing sound as impermanent by what is grasped by the eye. Furthermore, having abandoned such an examination, even if self-cognition is accepted, it is said for the sake of refuting: Self-cognition depends on being established, but in this way, memory is not the reason for memory, just as it arises in the continuum of others who do not know. If consciousness experiences both the object and its own nature, self-cognition may be established, but even so, later memory should not remember the experience of previous consciousness, because the previous experience and later memory are asserted to be different entities. For example, the memory of the Maitreya continuum does not remember the self-cognition and experience of objects, etc., that arise in the closely hidden continuum that one does not know. If the previous experience and the later memory belong to the same continuum, and because they are cause and effect, even if they are different, they can be remembered, then this reason destroys all distinctions. The reason "because it is other" destroys all the distinctions of the sign just mentioned, as follows: The previous experience and the later memory do not belong to the same continuum, nor are they cause and effect, because they are different entities, like experiences and memories of different continuums, and so on, which should be widely refuted. If, according to your view, how does memory arise? From whatever experienced the object, there is no other memory for me, therefore the thought "I saw" will arise, this is also the rule of worldly expression. Whatever previously experienced the object, the later memory is not another meaning from that, because the previous experience has ceased. Because it is not another meaning, therefore the one who experienced it is not the one who did not experience it with memory, and what is decided by experience, memory
