It should be admitted that an object with form is the cause of cognition. Because without faculties such as the eyes, one does not see objects such as form and sound. Thus, with this, what and what answers have been given? Seeing that and that as the same as the pledge, this dispute is eliminated. When the Madhyamikas explain that all three—object, faculty, and consciousness—are without inherent existence, the Vijnanavadin answers that objects are not truly existent, while consciousness is truly established: waking consciousness is empty of meaning because it is consciousness, like the consciousness in a dream. The object in the waking state is also of a false nature because it is an object, like the object in a dream. Similarly, defilement and purification do not exist without other conditions because they have no basis, like a garment made of tortoise hair. Therefore, whatever is asserted is seen by the wise Madhyamikas as the same as the pledge, without the power to establish anything, and thus these disputes of the Vijnanavadins are eliminated. Similarly, in establishing that consciousness is without true existence, there is no fault such as scriptural contradiction. Because the Buddhas have never taught that anything exists. As it is said in the Lankavatara Sutra: The three realms are merely designations; in reality, there are no things. Those who imagine designations to be real are the deluded ones. There is no self-nature, no mere consciousness, no alaya, and no real things. Foolish, bad children, the logicians, contemplate these like corpses. Therefore, it is said thus. Here it is said: Yogis, through the instructions of their gurus, see the ground filled with skeletons. If there is no object, there can be no consciousness, then how can yogis, relying on the instructions of their gurus, see the ground filled with skeletons when meditating on impurity? The answer is: There, too, all three are seen as unborn, because the scriptures teach that it is a reversed way of thinking. When yogis see the ground filled with skeletons, there, too, the object, faculty, and consciousness are all unborn. Because that samadhi is not truly attending to reality, but the scriptures say that it is attending to it in a reversed way. This is definitely not mistaken.

It should be considered as such. Otherwise, if the objects of your sensory consciousness are like that, so ugly, and the mind also changes accordingly, similarly, if you place your hope on that object, then another understanding will not become false either. If the objects of sensory consciousness are as they are, and the objects of the mind that meditates on the impure, such as skeletons, are not inverted, but are truly established, then the sensory consciousness that resides in the same suitable object, just as one person sees it, so do others, the object that the yogi sees as skeletons, etc., if he hopes to see skeletons, etc., and places his hope, then others who are not yogis will also understand, because that object is truly established as it appears. Furthermore, that samadhi is not false, nor will it be considered untrue. Similarly, just like the senses with cataracts, the idea that flowing water appears as pus and blood to pretas should also be understood as the same as what is said to the senses with cataracts. Wanting to summarize the meaning of showing that without knowable objects there is no knowledge, in short, just as there is no knowable object, so too there is no mind, please understand this meaning. Just as it is said, the knowable object has no self-nature, similarly, the mind that has its image also has no self-nature, please understand this meaning.
