arise. Just as in the great ocean, due to the wind, the waves of water, large and small, arise according to the cause, in the same way. The seeds of all defiled dharmas, all exist in the Alaya consciousness, from beginningless time, the consciousness that grasps the appearance of the grasper and the grasped, one after another is transmitted, abiding here, from the complete maturation of its own power, only the consciousness that appears as the grasper and the grasped arises, at this time, children will separately grasp the grasper and the grasped, but the existence of the grasped that is different from consciousness is not so. For example, the proponents of the Lord as the cause say: speech is the cause of speech sounds, crystal is the luster of water, limbs are like the divisions of the body, that is the cause of all beings with bodies. Just as the Lord claims to be the creator of all sentient beings, the proponents of Alaya consciousness also claim that Alaya itself is the cause of all sentient beings, the Lord is permanent, and Alaya is impermanent, this is only the difference. Because the establishment of the scriptures is just like this. Therefore, what is the nature of other's freedom? It becomes the cause of the existence of what is imputed, it arises in the absence of external grasping, it exists and the nature that is not the object of all elaboration exists. Therefore, the nature of other's freedom, that is, the non-true pervasive imputation, must be admitted to be the cause of the superimposition of persons and dharmas, otherwise, because there is no basis for confusion, nothing can be confused as me and dharma. For example, the cause of mistaking a rope for a snake cannot be without a rope, the cause of mistaking a clay etc. for a vase cannot exist in the sky without relying on clay etc. Therefore, this other's freedom, in the absence of external grasping, will become the nature of itself appearing as two, and it is substantially existent as the basis for the superimposition of me and dharma, and it exists as the nature that is not the object of all elaboration speech distinctions, because speech and distinctions etc. are the objects of superimposition, and other-dependent is the subsequently attained pure world.

Because that is the realm of activity of consciousness. Those are the views of the Mind-Only school. Second, refuting that has three points: refuting knowledge without an object of knowledge; refuting the inherently existent other-powered nature of the two-fold absence of self; explaining the intention of teaching Mind-Only. First: refuting the example of knowledge without an external object; also refuting other arguments for the absence of an external object. The first has two parts: refuting the example of the illusion of mental consciousness. Because consciousness is distinguished by the cognition of objects, and yet one speaks of only consciousness without seeing consciousness without an object, one asks: Where is the example of mind without an external object? One replies: Like a dream. For example, when one lies down in a very small room and falls asleep, if one dreams that a herd of elephants is crowded into the room, the object is not as it appears, because there is no space in the room to accommodate a herd of elephants. Similarly, if one says that all knowledge arises without existence, then, in order to show that it is also meaningless, one says: This should be considered. The meaning is that one should examine whether knowledge without an object is established in a dream. Why is that? Because, when I do not even have mind in a dream, then your example does not exist. When, for me, a follower of the Middle Way, there is no truly existent mind not only in the waking state but even in a dream, then the example of a dream that you, the Mind-Only school, have set forth is not an example for establishing the true existence of knowledge. If, when awake, one remembers a dream and thus has consciousness, then external objects will also exist in the same way. If one says that the illusion of experiencing a dream is remembered when awake, thereby establishing that there is an illusion of consciousness, then, just as there is knowledge in a dream, external objects will also exist. Why is that? Just as you remember "I saw," external objects are also the same. Just as in the waking state, the knowledge of remembering "I saw such and such," elephants and other external objects also have memory, because they are the same. The proponent of consciousness, in order to establish the example, stated another argument: If eye consciousness is impossible in sleep, then only mental consciousness exists.
