If ignorant children rashly slander karmic cause and effect, they will fall into the great abyss of the three lower realms because of inverting the acceptance and rejection of virtue and non-virtue. Therefore, the only thing that holy beings should do is to refute the wrong understanding of the relationship of karmic cause and effect by others. If, like nihilists, Madhyamikas also do not see any relationship of karmic cause and effect, how could they not misunderstand karmic cause and effect and invert acceptance and rejection? For example, if a person steals something, some people see it as it is and say, "This person stole something," while others, because they are not friendly with him, deliberately do not see it and say, "This person stole something." Although both say that he stole something, the former does not lie because he states the truth as it is, while the latter lies because he pretends to see when he has not seen the basis. Similarly, how can it be the same that Madhyamikas, having ascertained that all phenomena are without inherent existence by correct reasoning, say that karmic cause and effect are without inherent existence, and nihilists, while being attached to the things they see, slander the karmic cause and effect they have not seen? It is not the case that Madhyamikas, like nihilists, do not accept and reject virtue and non-virtue. Just as from an image without inherent existence arises the consciousness that appears in it, they see that there is no contradiction in the arising of desirable and undesirable results from virtuous and non-virtuous actions without inherent existence. Like a magician performing magic, they engage in acceptance and rejection without any inversion, in a way that is without any attachment. If one were to accept that the basis of the relationship of karmic cause and effect is the ālaya-vijñāna or the person, etc., one might be able to refute the nihilists' argument that there is no relationship of karmic cause and effect. But for those who say that there is no inherent existence, how can they refute the nihilists' argument, since there is no basis for the relationship of karmic cause and effect? Madhyamikas do not accept the ālaya-vijñāna, etc., in order to avoid the fault of having no relationship of karmic cause and effect, because they would be affected by other faults. Even without accepting these, they can refute the nihilists' argu

The refutation is not impossible, for example, the argument of nihilists that the relationship between action and result is unreasonable is only this much. If the action is exhausted, then the action done will be in vain, and it will encounter what has not been done. If it is not exhausted, then the action, because it is permanent, will not produce a result, or it will never produce a result, is that so? If some actions have birth, then they will inevitably be exhausted. When they are exhausted, there will also be the fault of the action done being in vain. Action does not have the slightest birth, because birth from self, other, both, and without cause has been prevented and hindered. Because there is no birth, it will not be exhausted, because exhaustion is preceded by birth. For example, the son of a barren woman does not die because he is not born. Because it is not exhausted, the result will not be in vain, because it is not contradictory for the result to arise from the action that is not exhausted. Action, because it is not born, can be inexhaustible. But how does a result arise from an action that is not born? Even if action does not produce a result, you have already established our tenet that there is no relationship between action and result, is that so? From a dharma that is not born by nature, it is also seen that a result arises, for example, in the image in water and a very clear mirror, it is seen that the consciousness that appears there arises. If that consciousness arises from the color of the mirror, and not from the image, is that so? The two appear the same to consciousness, how do you know the difference between one being a cause and the other not being a cause? If it is because the color exists and the image does not exist, is that so? If you admit that it is the cause of that consciousness merely because it exists, then other things such as tree stumps will also become its cause. If you admit that the color is the cause because it exists, and the image cannot be the cause because it does not exist, is that so? In front of that consciousness, the image is not non-existent, and in reality, color and so on are also not existent. Therefore, just as color and so on appear to eye consciousness and so on, and those are admitted to be the cause of the object, the image also appears to its own consciousness, so it is the condition of its object.
