In response to the question, "How can a result arise from a past action that has ceased?" Some conceive of the ālaya-vijñāna (storehouse consciousness) as having the imprints of past actions. Others conceive of other non-wasting dharmas like a loan contract. Still others conceive of the ālaya-vijñāna as having the imprints of actions pervading the entire stream of consciousness. Here, since action does not arise by its own nature, it does not cease by its own nature. Since it is not contradictory for a result to arise from an action that has not ceased, therefore, even without a basis for action and result such as the ālaya-vijñāna, the result of a past action is able to occur. In some places and times, even from an action that has ceased and been long past, a ripening result can arise without contradiction. Therefore, it should be known. Therefore, it is said in the scriptures: Because action does not arise, therefore it has no own nature. Because it is unborn, therefore it will not be wasted. As it is said. To explain the meaning of what was stated above through an example, it is said: Having seen objects aimed at in a dream, even when awake, attachment arises in the foolish. Likewise, even from an action that has ceased and has no own nature, there is a result. That is to say, having seen and dreamed of enjoying sensual pleasures with a beautiful woman in a dream, when one wakes up, the woman in the dream is empty of own nature and has ceased, but some fools still generate desire because of it. Similarly, for actions that are considered to have ceased and have no own nature, there is also the arising of a ripening result. If it is thought that because the action has not ceased, the ripening result arises, then, like an action that has not produced a ripening result, an action that has already produced a ripening result should also be able to produce a result, because it has not ceased. But that is not the case. For example: Although illusory objects are the same, those with cataracts see hair streaks. Seeing that it is not the nature of a real object, likewise, know the difference between what is ripe and unripe. Just as illusory objects such as hair streaks and rabbit horns are the same, but eyes deluded by cataracts can

Just as one sees the appearance of hair streaks in the sky, but does not see the appearance of other things such as rabbit horns, similarly, the actions that have and have not yet produced their results are the same in that they are not extinguished and are without inherent existence. However, actions that have not yet produced their fruit will produce results again, and you should know that actions that have already produced their fruit will not produce fruit again. From this example just given, it is certain that actions that have and have not produced fruit will and will not produce results again, and it is also certain that virtuous and non-virtuous results will be produced separately. Like this: Therefore, it is seen that non-virtuous results come from black actions, and virtuous results come from virtuous actions. Those without wisdom who are without attachment to virtue and non-virtue will be liberated, and the Buddha forbade thinking about the results of actions. Because hair streaks and so on are seen as certain even though they are without inherent existence, therefore, although virtuous and non-virtuous actions are without inherent existence, non-virtuous and unpleasant results come from non-virtuous black actions, not from virtuous actions. Virtuous and pleasant results are seen to come from virtuous actions, not from non-virtuous actions, and any wise person who is without attachment to both virtuous and non-virtuous actions will be liberated. Thus, because the way in which actions without inherent existence produce results and the certainty of results is very difficult to understand, if ordinary people do not understand these things and instead slander the results of actions, the Buddha, seeing that this would destroy conventional truth, said that the results of actions are inconceivable, and thus forbade children from thinking about the relationship between actions and results. Here, it should be understood that the meaning is this: The Madhyamikas do not assert that the relationship between actions and results is completely cut off, because this would harm their own tenets. What, then, is it? It is merely to eliminate the wrong views of others who attack the unreasonableness of the relationship between actions and results. Is it not true that there is no relationship between actions and results at all? If so, how can we prevent others from slandering the results of actions? In reality, although actions and results are without inherent existence, they are still like that.
