Since manifesting Suchness, why is it necessary to rely on other noble ones? Because the world itself is skilled in the principle of Suchness. If, even if one is skilled in Suchness, it is necessary to rely on the noble path to manifest it, and it is necessary to rely on other noble ones to demonstrate the means of the noble path, such as discipline and hearing, that is not the case, because the senses such as the eyes of the world itself can see Suchness. What is the use of striving for the means of the noble path, such as discipline and hearing, in order to manifest Suchness? It is meaningless. Therefore, for Suchness, foolish worldly people are not reliable measures, so even if the world establishes other-birth, there is no harm. At all times, the world is not a valid measure, therefore, at that time, the world is harmless. According to the principle stated above, when examining Suchness, at all times the world is not a valid measure, therefore, the world is harmless. Showing the object of harm by the world is: Then how will the world cause harm? The meaning of the world is eliminated by the world's own convention, then the world will cause harm. For example, when someone says that my property has been robbed, another person asks: What is property? That person says: A pot. A pot is not property, because it can be measured, like a pot in a dream, thus refuting. If the meaning of worldly convention is eliminated by the world itself, then the world will cause harm. When one abides in the observation of the noble ones, and takes the wise as a measure, then the world will not cause harm. Secondly, showing that other-birth is not established even in the world: Why do worldly people just plant seeds, saying "I have given birth to this son", and thinking "I have also planted a tree", therefore, there is no other-birth even from the world. Let alone the fact that things are born from others and established in Suchness, it is not established even in the world. Because worldly people put the impure seed of a son into the mother's womb, and then say about the later child, "I gave birth to this son."

Thus they speak, and having merely planted the seed of a tree, they think, aiming at the later trees, "This too I have planted." If cause and effect become other, having merely planted the seed, how can one name those fruits, saying, "These I have produced"? Therefore, worldly people do not name cause and effect as other. The Merit of Dependent Arising Establishing Neither Permanence nor Cessation Thirdly, explaining the merit of dependent arising establishing neither permanence nor cessation: Because a sprout is not other than a seed, therefore when a sprout exists, the seed does not cease. Because it is not one, therefore it cannot be said that when a sprout exists, the seed exists. If a sprout were other than a seed, then when a sprout arises, the seed would cease, just as because there is a mother yak, the death of a yak would not cease. According to our view, when a sprout arises, the seed is exhausted and does not cease, because a sprout is not other than a seed. Therefore, this eliminates cessation. It cannot be said that when a sprout exists, the seed exists permanently, because a sprout is not one with the seed. Therefore, this eliminates permanence. Therefore, the sutra says: "If there is a seed, then a sprout arises in this way; what is a seed is not exactly a sprout; it is neither different nor the same; such is the nature of phenomena." Here the meaning is: If seeds and sprouts had even a little bit of inherent existence, because there is no other way, they would have to become either one or other. When both seeds and sprouts are merely imputed and have no inherent existence at all, how could they be simultaneous or become other, like seeds and sprouts in a dream? Therefore, it must be undoubtedly admitted that no phenomenon arises with its own characteristic. If it is not so, if inherent existence arises dependently, then because denying it leads to the destruction of phenomena, if emptiness becomes the cause of the destruction of phenomena, that is unreasonable, therefore phenomena do not exist.
