Because there is no sprout when it ceases. Therefore, they are not other, how could a seed become another sprout? Because there is no otherness, it is impossible for a sprout to arise from something different from the seed. Therefore, abandon the view that things arise from elsewhere! If it is said that because the seed and the sprout do not exist simultaneously, it cannot be established as other, that is unreasonable. Why? Just as the two ends of a scale are high and low, if it is said that seeing them not existing simultaneously, will the produced and the producer arise simultaneously? Just as the two ends of a scale, the beginning and the end, are high and low, and they do not exist simultaneously, if it is said that the produced sprout and the producer seed, their arising and ceasing will also occur simultaneously, therefore it is established as other, that is also unreasonable, because the metaphor and the meaning are not the same. Like this, even if it is the same time, there is no same time here, because what is growing is tending towards arising, so it is not existent, and what is ceasing, even if it exists, is tending towards destruction. At that time, how can these be compared to a scale? The high and low of the scale are existing now, so it is the same time, but the seed and the sprout are not the same time here, because the sprout is growing, it is only clearly tending towards growth, so it does not exist now, and the seed is ceasing, it is only clearly tending towards destruction, so it exists at that time. How can the arising and ceasing of the sprout and the seed be compared to the high and low of the scale? If it is said that although the dharmas of the seed and the sprout are not simultaneous, the activities of arising and ceasing are simultaneous, that is not right, because there is no activity different from the dharma. Furthermore, arising is not reasonable without an agent. The activity of the sprout arising, when the seed is tending towards ceasing, cannot be existent, because at that time the agent of the activity of arising, that is, the sprout on which it depends, does not exist. Therefore, at the time of ceasing, the activity of arising is also impossible to exist. If it is said that, just like the high and low of the scale, from the very moment the seed ceases, the sprout arises, wasn't that said in the "Noble Rice Seedling Sutra"?

Now, although it is said, that is neither to show that it arises from another, nor to show that arising is established by its own nature. However, it is to clearly show that what arises instantaneously in dependence, without being examined, is like an illusion. As the teacher said: From a broken and unbroken seed, a sprout does not arise, therefore, you say that all arising is like an illusion. It is said. If things that are not simultaneous, like seeds and sprouts, do not have otherness, but eyes and so on, and feelings and, consciousness and so on, which are simultaneous with oneself, become the conditions for eye consciousness and so on. Thus, if there is otherness for simultaneous cause and effect, can arising from other be established? That is not so, because simultaneous things cannot be cause and effect. For example, for the mind of the eye, its producer is simultaneous, and the consciousness that arises together with the eye and so on, if there is otherness, then what is the need for arising when it exists? If it is said that it does not exist, then the fault has already been stated. For the mind of the eye, its producer, the eye and form and so on, which are simultaneous with itself, and the mental factors such as consciousness that arise together with itself, if they exist as otherness from the eye consciousness, then the eye consciousness must exist, because if it does not exist, it will not become its otherness. If it exists, then what is the need for arising for what exists? Because it exists, the eye and consciousness and so on are meaningless as producers. If you want to avoid that fault and say that eye consciousness does not exist, then saying that, it has already been said that from the non-existent eye consciousness, the eye and so on are not other. In this way, if one admits arising from other, if it is established as other, then the produced and the producer will not be established, and if the produced and the producer are established, then otherness is not established. Therefore, this conceptualization of arising from other is not reasonable. Third, refuting by examining the four extremes: If the producer, the produced, the other-arising is the cause, then what will existence, non-existence, both, and neither produce? If it exists, then what is needed? What can it do for the non-existent? What can it do for both? What can it do for what is apart from both? If the producer
