There are four theses: refuting the four extremes of arising, showing the lack of inherent existence for that very reason, showing conventional arising as dependent origination, and showing the necessity of analyzing with reason. The first has four parts, and the first of these is the refutation of self-arising, which has two parts: refuting in both truths and summarizing what is refuted. The first part also has refuting in the ultimate truth and refuting in the conventional truth. Considering the first case: "If that arises from that, there is no quality at all; it is not reasonable for what has already arisen to arise again." Thus it is said, if the sprout that is arising arises from its own nature, then there will be no qualities of the fruit, because what exists has already been obtained before. If it arises from itself, and what has already arisen arises again, then that is also not reasonable. For example: "If it is said that what has already arisen arises again, then the arising of sprouts, etc., will not be obtained; the seed will arise to the end of existence." Thus it is said, if it is thought that what has already arisen will arise again, then the later fruits such as sprouts, trunks, and bamboo shoots will not have the opportunity to arise. Because the earlier stages such as seeds, sprouts, and trunks do not cease, the arising of the later stages is not seen. If seeds, etc., arise from themselves, then the conditions for self-arising will never be incomplete, so there is no opportunity for the seed to cease. For the same reason, the seed itself will also arise to the end of existence. If it is said that the co-operative causes of the sprout, such as water and time, cause the seed to transform into the state of a sprout, and also because the sprout is contradictory to existing together with its own agent, the seed, therefore the seed is destroyed and arises, so there is no fault as stated above, and the seed and the sprout are not different entities, so it is not that it does not arise from itself, if you think so, this is also not reasonable. For example: "How can that itself destroy that? How can the sprout itself destroy that seed?" Because the sprout is not different from the seed, like the seed's own nature. If one destroys oneself, then one will never be destroyed.

If it is said that seeds are destroyed by water, fertilizer, etc., that is also unreasonable. If the seeds and water, etc., are not other, they should not be destroyers like sprouts. If they are other, then everything would destroy everything, so it is unreasonable. If it is said that even though a hammer is different from a vase, it can be seen destroying it, that is not so, because the same fault applies there as well. If it is said that what is seen is reasonable, then magic and dreams, etc., would also become reasonable. If it is said that those are due to illusion, then that is the same here as well. Furthermore, the function of the seed as a cause would result in no difference in the shape, color, taste, ability, and maturity of the sprout. If the seed and the sprout are one in essence, then the differences in the shape, color, taste, ability, and complete maturity of the seed as a cause, and the differences in the shape, color, taste, ability, and complete maturity of the sprout would be no different. Since differences are also observed, it is unreasonable for the essence to be one, like sprouts of water trees growing from seeds of garlic, etc. If one completely abandons one's previous nature and transforms into the nature of another, how is it still the same? If the seed completely abandons its previous nature of being a seed and transforms into the nature of being a sprout, so that the seed becomes a sprout, then how is that sprout still the nature of the seed? Because it has abandoned the nature of the seed and attained another state. If the shape, etc., of the seed and sprout are different, but the substance is not different, that is not so, because no substance other than the shape, etc., is observed. Furthermore, if the seed and sprout are not other here, then just as the seed cannot be grasped, neither can the sprout, or just as that can be grasped, so can this. Therefore, we do not assert that they are one. If, in this state of wanting to grow, the seed and sprout are not other, then just as the self-nature of the seed cannot be grasped in the state of the sprout, neither can the self-nature of the sprout, or just as the nature of the sprout can be grasped, so can the nature of the seed.
