It is merely because one uses terms such as "sprout arises from seed" and "smoke arises from fire." If that is the case, then by negating the arising of the four extremes, arising will not be negated, because conventional arising is not negated. If one says that, then conventional arising is not to be negated. Rather, conventional arising that is free from the four extremes is to be termed dependent arising, because dependent arising is the Middle Way. As it is said in the treatise: "Whatever is dependent arising, that is explained as emptiness. That is dependently designated; that itself is the Middle Way." That is what was said. Speaking of arising from any of the four extremes is not speaking of dependent arising, because for one who speaks of dependent arising, there is no acceptance of falling into extremes, because dependent arising is the antidote to all views of clinging to extremes. As it is said in the treatise: "Whatever arises in dependence on something, that is neither the very same as it, nor is it different from it; therefore, it is neither annihilation nor permanence." It is also said in this very text that: "Therefore, this reasoning of dependent arising destroys all the nets of bad views." Therefore, the schools of both self and others are not speaking of dependent arising because they accept the arising of any of the four extremes. Whoever speaks of dependent arising has abandoned all extremes and has entered the great path of the Sugatas, the Middle Way, because the Bhagavan has negated the arising of the four extremes and has taught dependent arising itself. As the teacher said: "Suffering is done by oneself, or done by others, or done by both, examined by the causeless thinkers; you have taught it arises dependently." Therefore, he praised. If speaking of dependent arising and speaking of the four extremes are not contradictory, then how could the Able One, having taught dependent arising, show the difference of being superior to the logicians who speak of the four extremes? Therefore, the Madhyamikas do not accept the arising of the four extremes either conventionally or ultimately, because they are those who speak of dependent arising. Whoever speaks of dependent arising does not fall into any extreme, and therefore to anything

Since there is no attachment, there is no falling away from the truth of ultimate reality. Since all the terms of the world and beyond are not inappropriate for this, there is also no falling away from the truth of conventional reality. Therefore, it is said in the treatise: For whom emptiness is possible, for them everything is possible. For whom emptiness is not possible, for them everything is not possible. This is what is said. In this way, for the Prasangika Madhyamika who speaks of dependent arising, since there is no position whatsoever, it is impossible for others to refute him. For that very reason, it is said in the Vigrahavyavartani: If I had some thesis, then I would have that fault. Since I have no thesis, I am faultless. This is what is said. If there is no thesis, then why establish the four theses that negate the four extremes? These are merely established as theses in the face of those who say that things arise from the four extremes, in order to refute them, but it is not the Madhyamika's own system, because the object to be refuted, self-arising, etc., is not established. There is no negation of what is not to be negated, just as a rabbit's horn cannot be cut off. Therefore, it is said: Since there is nothing to be negated, I negate nothing. If the reasoning that refutes the arising from the four extremes is one's own reasoning, or is it another's? If it is one's own, then how can the unarisenness established by it not become one's own position? It is the reasoning accepted by others, not one's own, because if one does not accept even a little bit of the position to be established, then what is the use of the reasoning that establishes it? How can one refute others with the reasoning of others? One refutes by showing the contradiction within what is accepted, and when one sees the contradiction within one's own system, it is in order to reverse the attachment to one's own position. Even if one sees that one's own system is contradictory, one will not become respectful to the Madhyamika, because one has not seen the establishment of the Madhyamika position. That is not the case, because one sees that all the positions that fall into extremes are contradictory within their systems, and when attachment to those positions is reversed, one will become respectful to the dependent arising, the Middle Way, which is free from all positions. It is enough to give. Refutation of self-arising. Second, the reasoning of establishment is
