If it is said that there is no fault in abandoning, then those who are manifestly attached to the aggregates as impermanent and so forth will not realize the selflessness of the person, because the basis for clinging to self is focused on the aggregates. Thus, it is also said in the Precious Garland: 'As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there is clinging to self. From clinging to self, karma arises again, and from that, birth arises. Without beginning or middle in the three paths, the center of samsara, like a wheel of fire, is a continuous cycle of mutual dependence.' Thus, starting from the entrance into samsara, it is shown that attachment to the aggregates is the root of birth. Again, it is said in the same text: 'Because it is not obtained in oneself or others, nor in the three times, the clinging to self will be exhausted, and then karma and birth will also be exhausted.' Thus, starting from the cessation of samsara, it is shown that knowing the aggregates to be without inherent existence is the antidote to birth. If it is said that these are spoken with regard to Bodhisattvas, that is not the case, they are spoken with regard to Hearers and Solitary Realizers. How is this known? From the fact that immediately following it, with regard to Bodhisattvas, it is said: 'Thus, even a Bodhisattva, having seen this, definitely desires enlightenment. However, with compassion, he connects the interval of existence until enlightenment.' For this reason. Furthermore, in the Sutras of the Hearers, it is also taught that the aggregates are without inherent existence, as it is said: 'Form is like a mass of foam, feeling is like a water bubble, perception is like a mirage, formations are like a plantain tree, consciousness is like an illusion, taught by the Kinsman of the Sun.' Thus, the five aggregates are analyzed as being without inherent existence, like illusions and so forth. The Teacher also intends to show this very meaning, and so he says: 'In the Great Vehicle, unbornness is taught, the exhaustion of others is emptiness. Exhaustion and non-arising are the same in meaning, therefore please be patient.' And again: 'The Bhagavan, with his knowledge of things and non-things, from the instruction of Katyayana, refuted both existence and non-existence.' Thus it is said. Thus, in the first turning of the wheel, for those who have truly entered the Hearer Vehicle as well...

If someone asks: Why isn't the Dharma taught through the aspects of arising and ceasing, but instead through the aspect of non-inherent existence? This is because it is necessary to dispel the fear of emptiness for those who have not fully tamed their minds. As it is said in the "Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning": Arising and ceasing are taught for a purpose. By knowing arising, one knows ceasing. By knowing ceasing, one knows impermanence. By knowing entering into impermanence, one also understands the nature of Dharma. Therefore, it is taught. If someone asks: How can some, like Venerable Kaundinya, see the suchness of Dharma from what is taught? Answer: For those who have fully tamed their minds, they can understand emptiness from the Dharma taught through the aspects of arising and ceasing, because arising and ceasing are only applicable to dependent arising, which is without inherent existence. If someone asks: If Hearers and Solitary Realizers have realized the selflessness of phenomena, why don't they abandon the obscurations to knowledge? Answer: Merely seeing the selflessness of phenomena does not abandon the obscurations to knowledge, but it is through prolonged familiarization that it is abandoned. Hearers and others do not familiarize themselves with the path for a long time, but attain their own fruit by familiarizing themselves with three lifetimes, etc. If someone asks: If the selflessness of phenomena is also taught in the Hearer's canon, what is the difference between the canons of the Great and Small Vehicles? Answer: The Great Vehicle is not distinguished merely by teaching the selflessness of phenomena, but also teaches the Bodhisattva grounds, perfections, great compassion, and aspirations, etc., which are not taught in the Hearer's Vehicle. As it is said in the "Precious Garland": In the Hearer's Vehicle, the Bodhisattva's aspirations, conduct, and complete dedication are not taught, how can one become a Bodhisattva? The meaning of abiding in the Bodhisattva's conduct is not taught in the Sutras, but is taught in the Great Vehicle, therefore the wise hold it. That is what is said. Furthermore, in the Hearer's Vehicle, the selflessness of phenomena is taught only briefly, in order to abandon only the obscurations of afflictions. In the Great Vehicle, the obscurations to knowledge are taught.
