They are the cause of the sons of the Buddhas. Why are only these three said to be the cause of Bodhisattvas? Because one who diligently cultivates the cause of perfect omniscience, without any deficiency, and without being inverted, is called a Bodhisattva, for the sake of studying the cause of great Bodhi. These three are also the cause of the wisdom of omniscience, without any deficiency, and without being inverted. As it is said in the *Ornament of Clear Realization*: "Secret Lord, the wisdom of perfect omniscience arises from the cause of Bodhicitta, with compassion as its root, and perfected by skillful means." And as it is said in the *Precious Garland*: "Its root is Bodhicitta, as stable as the king of mountains, compassion reaching all directions, and wisdom not relying on the two extremes." Therefore, only these three are said to be the cause of Bodhisattvas. If all three are the cause of Bodhisattvas, why is only great compassion praised? Because the root of both Bodhicitta and non-dual wisdom is compassion itself, therefore compassion is the most important. It is like this: Why is compassion praised first? Because compassion is the seed, water, and long-term enjoyment of the harvest of the Victorious Ones, which matures in its dwelling place. Just as seeds, water, and ripening are essential for the flourishing of external grains and fruits, causing the unsprouted sprout to arise, causing the sprouted to grow, and causing the collection of seeds to be transmitted from one to another and to remain for a long time, so too, the first, middle, and last three are essential. Similarly, because great compassion, the love, causes the unsprouted sprout of Bodhicitta to arise at the beginning of this excellent harvest of the Victorious Ones, it is like a seed; in the middle, it causes the two collections of merit and wisdom that have already arisen to grow, so it is like water; and finally, it causes the enjoyment of the holy Dharma to abide for a long time.

Because it is like ripening. I, Chandrakirti, at the beginning of writing this treatise, praise the great compassion itself. Why is compassion itself like a seed? Because it gives rise to the sprouts of the two types of Bodhicitta, conventional and ultimate, which have not yet arisen. Thus, a compassionate person, suffering from the suffering of others, will surely manifest conventional Bodhicitta, thinking, "Because I must completely save all sentient beings who are suffering, I will liberate this entire world from suffering and place them in the state of Buddhahood." This vow cannot be accomplished by abandoning non-dual wisdom, so afterwards, one will surely enter into the non-dual wisdom, which is the nature of ultimate Bodhicitta. Therefore, great compassion is like the seed of all the Buddhas' Dharmas. Why is it like water? Because the sprout of Bodhicitta, until it produces the perfect fruit, the ultimate state of Buddhahood, will not gradually decline in the intermediate stage, but will grow more and more. Thus, even if Bodhicitta has already arisen, if it is not repeatedly watered with the water of compassion afterwards, one will be lazy in performing the vast two accumulations for a long time for the benefit of others, and without accumulating the vast accumulation of fruits, one will surely completely pass into Nirvana in the Hearer's stage or the Solitary Buddha's stage. Therefore, compassion is the same as water in causing the Buddhas' Dharmas to arise. Why is it like ripening? Although the Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have attained the Dharmakaya, which is free from all elaborations of self-interest, because of the complete ripening of great compassion, the Rupakaya turns the wheel of Dharma as long as Samsara exists, causing the fruits of the assembly of noble ones to continuously increase for a long time from one to another. If one is separated from the complete ripening of great compassion, even if one has attained the vast state of fruit, one will pass into Nirvana.
