This treatise definitively establishes the two aspects of profundity and vastness. There are also two purposes: the temporary purpose and the ultimate purpose. The temporary purpose is also twofold: the purpose of understanding the subject matter and the purpose of entering the treatise. The first is that from this treatise, one can easily understand the two aspects of profundity and vastness as described. The second is that here, the treatise of the Nāgārjuna's school is established, and after refuting with reason those who speak differently from it, one will singularly realize the system of Nāgārjuna as supreme, and will respectfully enter its treatises such as the Madhyamaka. As it is said in the commentary, "Because one wishes to compose the Entering the Middle Way in order to enter the Madhyamaka treatises." The ultimate purpose is to rely on these temporary purposes and enter the correct path, thereby realizing the unsurpassed profundity and vastness, and attaining the state of omniscience. Explanation of the First Chapter This treatise, Entering the Middle Way, which possesses such a subject matter and special purpose, should be understood through three condensed meanings: the limb of entering the act of composing, the nature of the treatise to be entered, and the limb of accomplishing the act. First, within the limb of entering the act of composing, there are two aspects: showing the cause for praising the Bhagavan, the Great Compassionate One, who is the root of all great virtues, and showing the praise of that by stating its nature. Regarding the first, two verses are mentioned, such as, "Hearers and middling Buddhas are born from the Powerful Sage, Buddhas are also born from Bodhisattvas, the mind of compassion and non-dual wisdom, the mind of enlightenment is the cause of the Buddhas' sons." The first of these verses mainly shows the Bodhisattva among the four supreme individuals, and also shows that its cause is the three dharmas, such as compassion. Among them, the Hearers and the Solitary Buddhas, who become middling Buddhas, are born from the Powerful Sage, the Tathagata, the Perfectly Enlightened One, because when the Buddha comes into the world, he perfects dependent origination.

It will be spoken without distortion, so that the disciples, by hearing, thinking, and meditating on it, will, according to their respective superior inclinations, fully accomplish the three enlightenments, such as that of the Hearers. If it is reasonable that the Hearers are born from the words of the Buddha, then are not the Solitary Realizers those who, without relying on the teachings of others, realize enlightenment themselves? How can they be said to be born from the words of the Buddha? There is no fault, because some have heard the Tathagata speak of dependent origination, and although they are skilled in understanding the ultimate truth, they will not attain Nirvana in this lifetime alone. However, just as the ripening of karma is certain to be experienced, they will undoubtedly attain Nirvana in another lifetime. Moreover, if they do not encounter the appearance of a Buddha, they will become Solitary Conquerors. As it is said in the Four Hundred: "If by knowing that, one does not attain cessation here, in another life, without effort, one will certainly attain it, like karma." And as it is said in the Middle Way: "When the Perfect Buddhas have not appeared, and the Hearers have also perished, the wisdom of the Solitary Buddhas arises greatly without reliance." Furthermore, the Solitary Realizers, in their last lifetime, do not closely rely on the teachings of others, but they are not entirely independent in all respects. Why are they called Hearers? Because they proclaim to others the attainment of the fruit of true instruction, in the manner of "Thus it has been done, and from this, no other existence is known." Or, because they have heard the Great Vehicle path from the Tathagatas and proclaim it to those who strive for its meaning, they are called Hearers, as it is said in the Lotus Sutra of the Good Law: "Lord, today we have become Hearers, we will truly proclaim the supreme enlightenment, and we will also utter the sound of supreme enlightenment, therefore we Hearers are like the inexhaustible." Would Bodhisattvas not also have the same fault? They would not, because it is merely proclaiming, and whoever does not practice accordingly is called a Hearer, but not the Bodhisattvas.
