It is unreasonable to take a short life as if it were long and to act carelessly. As it is said: The causes of death are many, but the causes of life are few. Even those [causes of life] are [also] causes of death. As it is said, the time of death is uncertain, so the future life is uncertain whether it is long or short. It is also impossible to determine whether the past life was long or short, because its length depends on the length of future life. Therefore, if you think that the length of past and future life is equal, or that the past is short and the future is long and unequal, it clearly shows that you are afraid of death. For example, a person walking on a dangerous road, like being afraid of robbers, pretends not to be afraid and shouts loudly, which only exposes his fear. Second, refuting that commonality is the cause of fearlessness: If one cannot determine that the future is long, but death is common to all sentient beings, so there should be no fear. If you think that because death is common to other sentient beings, you are not afraid of death, that is unreasonable. Because when one person suffers the harm of the Lord of Death, and others do not see it, they will suffer from death out of jealousy. At that time, if they see that others are also suffering the same, this person's suffering will not disappear. For example, when a king first levies taxes from a certain village, that village will initially suffer, but later when taxes are levied from all villages, it will no longer suffer. Similarly, when death comes to one person, if others do not see it, it causes suffering, but the nature of death itself causes suffering, so commonality itself is not the cause of eliminating suffering. Therefore, it is reasonable to be afraid of what should be feared. Third, refuting that remedies are the cause of fearlessness: If one thinks that without sickness and old age there will be no death, and these can be remedied by medicine and tonics, etc., so there is no fear of death. Diseases can be treated with medicine, and aging can be delayed with tonics, so you may not be afraid of these. But what about the ultimate punishment—the Lord of Death?
