Explanation of Chapter One. Explanation of Chapter One. I prostrate to the Buddhas of the ten directions and their retinues! Although you do not possess the elaborations of knowledge and objects of knowledge, you clearly see all objects of knowledge without confusion. Like the sky, you are inexpressible and free from all elaborations, yet your activity is continuous. I bow to that one! In order to establish the supreme and excellent teachings of the Victorious One, in Simhala, you manifested as a youthful divine child. You were born beautifully in a garden of immaculate hundred-petaled lotuses. May that one who makes the world flourish be victorious! His doctrine is like the glory of the sun, clarifying the reality of all kinds of knowledge, completely dispelling the darkness of extreme views, and opening up the lotus of the fortunate mind. Here, the Four Hundred Verses on Yoga Practice, which clearly shows the order of meditating on the reality of the two truths for Bodhisattvas, is the Dharma to be explained. This has two parts: the general meaning and the branch meaning. The first also has three parts: the purpose, the summary, and the meaning of the title. The first is: From what is the subject matter derived, and why was this treatise composed? It was composed from the treatises taught by the teacher Nagarjuna, such as the Root Verses on the Middle Way, in order to teach the two truths, conventional and ultimate. But haven't those treatises already taught that? What is the use of teaching it here again? Those treatises mainly teach the cutting of superimpositions through hearing and thinking, while this mainly teaches the practice of yogis cultivating the reality of the two truths through meditation, the practice of samadhi. Furthermore, in the Madhyamaka treatises, the teacher refuted the assertions of his own and others' schools with various kinds of reasoning. Others may suspect that the Madhyamaka treatises were made to subdue other opponents and are treatises that emphasize debate. Therefore, in this treatise, the reality of the two truths, which is the subject of the teacher's treatises, is clearly shown through the practice of yoga. Therefore, the teacher's treatises do not emphasize debate, but rather, in order for the world to realize reality, they clearly show the reality of things with various kinds of reasoning, thereby entering the two truths.

Understanding this clarifies the principle of yoga, as it is said in the Madhyamakavatara: 'Because of attachment to debates arising from treatises, it is taught to liberate them from that very nature of emptiness. If it is explained in such a way that other doctrines are destroyed, there is no fault in this.' Thus it is said. If this treatise explains the stages of yoga for entering the reality of the two truths, then what is its purpose? By understanding the reality of the two truths through the stages of hearing, thinking, and meditating, one will attain the state of omniscience, which is the perfection of benefiting oneself and others. As it is said in the sutra: 'The Knower of the World, without hearing from others, teaches by means of these two truths. Whatever is conventional is also ultimate; there is no third truth.' Thus it is said. And in the Madhyamaka it is also said: 'The Dharma taught by the Buddhas truly relies on two truths.' Thus it is said. The second has two parts: the actual explanation and the refutation of wrong views about it. The first is: How does this treatise explain the two truths? In the commentary it says: 'From this, how worldly things abide, having distinguished them, gradually the ultimate is shown.' As it is said: 'Without relying on the conventional, the ultimate is not realized; without realizing the ultimate, Nirvana is not attained.' In this way, in the sixteen chapters of this treatise, the first eight chapters, as a means to realize the ultimate, explain how the conventional truth abides by distinguishing it, and the latter eight chapters will explain the ultimate truth. Among them, the first four chapters, by eliminating the four perversions, clearly show how the four worldly things abide in the true conventional truth, that is: the five aggregates, such as form, arise dependent on causes and conditions, and because they have arising, they are impermanent. Whatever is impermanent is necessarily of the nature of being harmed by destruction, therefore it is suffering. Whatever is suffering is always impure because it causes aversion. Whatever is impure is to be abandoned, therefore clinging to it as self and what belongs to self, we
