It is called the "Hundred Dharmas" because it dispels various confusions. It is a treatise because it tames various attachments. Therefore, it is named the "Treatise on Hundred Dharmas" through the door of its function. Secondly, regarding the meaning of the branches: It explains the path of maturation based on the conventional truth, and the path of liberation based on the ultimate truth. Among these two, the first is further divided into two: eliminating the four inversions that are obstacles, and explaining the conduct of Bodhisattvas, which are conducive conditions. Among the first of these, there are four parts. The first is: In order to be in accordance with renunciation, and because understanding it makes it easier to comprehend suffering and so on, therefore, in order to fully clarify how things exist in the conventional sense, it is first explained that one should meditate on impermanence as an antidote to the inversion of permanence. This is further divided into two: the actual method of meditating on impermanence, and explaining its benefits. Among the first of these, there are two parts: meditating on remembering one's own death, and showing that it is not appropriate to grieve for the death of others. Among the first of these, there are two parts: a brief instruction to encourage diligence through the door of remembering death, and an extensive explanation through refutation and answers. The first is: For any being who has not been liberated from the clutches of the Lord of Death, whether in the underworld, on the earth, or above the earth, or in the three realms of desire, form, and formlessness, the Lord of Death, the king, is not driven by others, nor does he drive others himself. Rather, he himself, as the Lord of Death, cuts off the lives of beings, and therefore no one's power can stop him. Like an executioner brandishing a sword, therefore, having been seized by the signs of death, or as if one's head or clothes were on fire, one must strive to cultivate the noble path in order to destroy the demon of the Lord of Death. If one does not respect sleep and does not take measures to counteract death, like the truly accomplished ones who have destroyed the demon of the Lord of Death, such as the Buddhas and Arhats, then what could be more wicked than such a negligent person? Therefore, those who are in the midst of the Lord of Death's punishment should recognize their own situation and constantly abide in diligence. Here ends the first eight.

In the commentary, it is said that the explanations with examples for each verse are not written here because of the fear of too many words. If someone asks, shouldn't this treatise also be offered initially in order to generate respect for the teacher? The answer is, indeed. However, the teacher Nagarjuna once said that in the root of the "Treatise on the Middle Way," the Blessed One was initially praised with phrases such as "Whatever arises dependently (Tibetan: གང་གིས་རྟེན་ཅིང་འབྲེལ་བར་འབྱུང་།)." This treatise also belongs to that category, therefore, a separate offering praise was not written, as the previous teachers said. The second part consists of two types: coarse continuous impermanence and subtle momentary impermanence. The first is further divided into five points, the first of which is refuting the idea that being alive can prevent death: If it is said that there is a lord of death who rules the three realms, even so, because there is a state of being alive before that, one will not fear the lord of death as long as one is alive. Being alive is not a factor that prevents death, because it itself has the nature of death. Just like that, because it is the cause of aging, death, and birth, just as cooking food is only for eating, all beings are initially born only to die, just as an executioner takes a person to be killed to the execution ground, in the middle they will also be affected by other factors such as aging, disease, and decline, and will not stay for even a moment, but will live in a state of going to the lord of death, just like a person to be killed being beheaded, it seems as if they are always being killed, not living, because they have already entered the path of death, just like livestock being taken to the slaughterhouse. Therefore, do not deceive yourself by expecting to live from the beginning. As it is said: "The hero of man, the first night, where the world dwells in the womb, from then on, day by day, without escape, goes to the lord of death." Just like it is said. If it is said that nowadays the lifespan is a hundred years, and my first sixteen years have passed, and there are eighty-four years left, so it is reasonable to have hope for living because the time of living is long. You see the past time as short, and the future
