However, since there is no remedy, you should most clearly fear death. One should not deceive oneself by merely hoping for a cure for aging and sickness. Fourth, refuting that uncertainty is a cause for not fearing: If there is indeed such a thing as death that cannot be averted by human power, even so, since it is not certain now, it is not a cause for inducing great fear. If it were true to say that death is not common and will become invisible, then death is not difficult to understand. Just as the livestock to be slaughtered have death in common and see each other die, death is also common to all beings. Furthermore, when many are seen to be dying, what reason do you have not to fear the Lord of Death? There are two reasons for not fearing death: not noticing it and transcending it. If you do not have these two, then why do you act so carelessly? If even though death is clearly noticed, one does not fear because the time of death is uncertain, if you think that because the time of death is uncertain, you will not die and are eternal, then it is precisely because the time of death is uncertain that one should be afraid. To say that it is not frightening is very foolish. For the Lord of Death may come and cause harm at any time, whether today or tomorrow. Therefore, one should abandon hope for a long life, manifest the thought of death, and be vigilant. Fifth, refuting that death is not a cause of fear for a hero: If death is certain, then it only causes fear for cowards, but not for heroes. For heroes are devoted to gaining wealth, honor, and fame, and they do not fear even when sharp weapons fall on their bodies or when they face danger, and because they see that they can harm others with their own strength. If one only looks to future benefits in this life, such as wealth and honor, and enters the battlefield to gain wealth and honor, without considering the exhaustion of life, which is the basis for achieving these benefits, then how can your act of selling your own life be said to be for the sake of achieving future benefits?

Who would say you are wise? No wise person would say so. Only fools are amazed by such behavior. If sacrificing one's life for money is shameful, then is it appropriate to commit evil to protect one's own life? For example, some people pawn themselves to drink alcohol, disregarding the suffering of poverty and so on that they may suffer in the future. Similarly, due to attachment to things like mirages, they disregard the intense suffering of hell and so on, and pawn themselves to commit evil deeds for the sake of desire. Why is this? Therefore, you who commit evil for the sake of desire, must be like the noble Arhats, devoid of attachment to me. Otherwise, committing evil, which is the cause of suffering for oneself, is inappropriate and should not be done. Secondly, one should not sell oneself in this life to commit evil in the hope of living long. For, for any sentient being, what is called "living" is nothing more than each moment of mind. Thus, all conditioned phenomena are momentary, because they perish immediately upon arising, without any obstruction. Impermanence also depends solely on the moment of arising. If all conditioned phenomena are momentary, then why do people in the world, presuming to live long, engage in inappropriate behavior? This is because similar conditioned moments arise continuously, and people are deceived by their similarity. Beings inevitably fail to recognize that moment, and thus presume to live long and engage in inappropriate behavior. Therefore, in the world, it is rare to find someone who knows the nature of self as it is. Those who know the nature of self are not reversed, so they do not commit evil, while most people in the world are immersed in sin. If you say that even though life is momentary, its continuation is long, so it is reasonable to be attached to it, then you like to live long, but you do not like aging, which is associated with wrinkles and white hair, etc. Therefore, alas, this perverse behavior of yours seems good only to unholy ordinary people like yourself, but not to others. Therefore, one does not desire old age.
