Because I am not suitable to be completely grasped, therefore I am without self. Therefore, worldly things appear in such a way as to be inverted, and there is no doubt that samsara should be known as something to be abandoned, and thus it indirectly shows that Buddhahood is something to be attained. And Buddhahood is also attained through practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, therefore the fifth chapter shows the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Because the conduct of a Bodhisattva cannot be practiced due to the suppression of afflictions, therefore the sixth chapter examines afflictions. Because objects are the cause of the arising, increasing, and abiding of afflictions, therefore the seventh chapter examines objects. Objects are also the cause of the arising of afflictions for those who have not realized the nature of beings' Dharma and who have improper attention, therefore, in order to show its antidote—the ultimate truth, in order to make the listener and disciple's continuum a suitable vessel for showing the nature of Dharma, the eighth chapter shows the method of completely subduing the disciple's continuum. Because after the continuum is completely purified, the ultimate reality of the Dharma can be shown, therefore after that, with four distinctions, as previously stated, from the conduct of a Bodhisattva to the complete subduing of disciples, it shows the entering mind of enlightenment. After that, with the following eight distinctions, it shows the nature of non-dual wisdom—the ultimate mind of enlightenment. In this way, this treatise with the nature of sixteen distinctions, as the teacher Nagarjuna said: 'If oneself and this world want to attain the unsurpassed enlightenment, its root, the mind of enlightenment, is as stable as the king of mountains, and the compassion that reaches all directions, and the wisdom that does not rely on duality.' In order to show that the main three Dharmas of the cause of such perfect enlightenment are complete without omission, it shows that all the conditions for a person in the world to attain unsurpassed enlightenment are complete. Second, there are two types: dispelling wrong thoughts on the body of expressive words, and dispelling wrong thoughts on the body of expressed meanings. The first is: Some present-day poets have divided it into two types. These sixteen distinctions, as previously stated, are originally one body of treatise, but the present-day poets

The monk Dharma-rakṣita, how he divided and established it, explained the nature of the treatise in two parts: the first eight chapters are the "Hundred on Dharma," and the latter eight chapters are the "Hundred on Debate." Now I will divide them into one whole. I, Candrakīrti, will divide these sixteen chapters as the nature of one treatise, and by doing so, I will fulfill the intention of the author of the treatise himself, thereby upholding the previous establishment, and it will greatly benefit those who need to be tamed, because all the methods of practice of the two truths that the treatise wants to express are included, and therefore it can truly accomplish the benefit of oneself and others. Secondly, the monk Dharma-rakṣita also explained the nature of the meaning of the treatise as the view of the Mind-Only school, mainly based on his own preferences. This is not reasonable, because the noble Āryadeva seems to want to be considered a disciple of Nāgārjuna. Therefore, his treatise should not have a tenet different from the tenet of Nāgārjuna. Thus, the noble Āryadeva was a prince born in the island of Sinhala (Sri Lanka), who eventually renounced his right to the throne and became a monk there. After that, he came along the southern route and became an attendant of Nāgārjuna. Precisely because he followed the tenet of Nāgārjuna, the truth that this "Four Hundred Verses" wants to express should not be any different in nature from the truth spoken of in Nāgārjuna's Madhyamaka treatises. Therefore, if someone separately explains their nature, then separately explaining their tenets is very rash, because they misunderstand its Dharma-nature. Thirdly, therefore, this treatise has four hundred verses, so it should be called the "Four Hundred Verses" (Sanskrit: Catuḥśataka-śāstra), but in the fundamental texts, the "Hundred Verses" (Sanskrit: Śataka-śāstra) appears, because this "Four Hundred Verses" hides the word "four," and in order to dispel various discriminations, it is called the "Hundred Verses," this treatise is made to tame attachments. After hiding the first syllable of "four" (Sanskrit: Catuḥ), various discriminations...
