Regarding the refutation of signs, there are two types: refutation of the entity and refutation of the proof of arising. The first is: Furthermore, does this arising occur before, after, or simultaneously with the arising entity? If arising exists before the arising entity, it is unreasonable because there is no basis. It is also unreasonable afterward because what is not yet arisen does not exist, and arising afterward is meaningless. If it is said to exist simultaneously, that is simply impossible because then the two would become mutually independent. Because it is so, arising and the arising entity, in relation to a pot, cannot occur simultaneously, and since they cannot arise simultaneously, it is unreasonable to say that the pot arises. The second is: Someone says, "The pot arises because it has the nature of disintegration and is old." That is also unreasonable. If there is such a thing as "old," does it exist in something that arose earlier or later? If it exists in the entity of the pot that arose earlier, it will not become old because it arose earlier, so it is called new. What arises later will also not become old because even at the time of arising later, it is new. Therefore, since there is no old, the arising that it represents is impossible. Fifth, the refutation of examining the three times is: From this perspective, there is also no arising because there is no arising in the three times. For example, the present phenomenon does not arise from the present itself because cause and effect cannot exist simultaneously. It also does not arise from the future because it does not exist. Nor does it arise from the past because it has already ceased. Therefore, there is no arising by nature. Second, showing the result of refuting arising is: Furthermore, if phenomena have inherent existence, since inherent existence does not change, and there is no arising from non-existence, then from where does arising come? Since what has arisen does not disappear, then where should it go at the time of cessation? This is impossible. The Blessed One said, "Monks, the eye does not come from anywhere, nor does it go anywhere at the time of cessation." Therefore, in that case, what meaning would arise?

Coming into being is coming from the future to the present, and cessation is not going from the present to the past, therefore there is no inherent existence. Since there is no inherent existence, how could the phenomena of inner and outer not be like illusion? This is what the teacher said, relying on the wisdom of the noble ones, as the fruit of discriminating investigation. Therefore, when the noble ones see that phenomena, like illusion, have no essence, then all attachments to the cycle of existence, which has no essence, will be completely exhausted, and they will become liberated. There is nothing unreasonable in this, because by not denigrating dependent origination, all the phenomena of the world will not be destroyed, and because they have comprehended reality as it is, liberation will be attained. Second, there are four ways to show that characteristics are empty of inherent existence. First, examining and refuting sequential and simultaneous occurrence: The characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as arising, abiding, and ceasing, are mutually contradictory, so it is not possible for them to occur simultaneously, nor is it possible for them to occur sequentially. Since there are no two at a time, it is impossible for them to occur one at a time. Since there is no cause for establishment other than sequential and simultaneous occurrence, when could they possibly occur? This is what is said. Second, refuting the fault of characteristics being infinitely extended: All the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as arising, etc., belong to the category of conditioned phenomena, therefore they are acknowledged as conditioned. Therefore, for them, all the characteristics of conditioned phenomena, such as arising, etc., will occur again. Thus, arising will have another arising, and like arising, cessation will also have another cessation, and like cessation, abiding will also have another abiding. Since these are also conditioned, they need other characteristics, and for those there are others, and for those others there are others, so they will be infinitely extended. If they are infinitely extended, then all things cannot be established, so the characteristics of conditioned phenomena are empty of inherent existence. Third, examining and refuting one and different: Are these characteristics different from or not different from their basis? If, for the moment, it is thought that the characteristics are different from their basis, then how can they be like heat and cold, pleasure and pain,
