This has two parts: the general meaning and the branch meaning. The first also has three parts: the purpose, the summary, and the title. First, what is the subject matter, and why was this treatise composed? It was composed to explain the two truths, conventional and ultimate, from the treatises taught by Master Nagarjuna, such as the Root Verses on the Middle Way. Have those treatises not already explained it? What is the purpose of explaining it here again? Those mainly show how to cut through superimpositions through hearing and thinking, while this mainly shows how yogis experience the suchness of the two truths through meditation, the practice of samadhi. Alternatively, when the master refutes the tenets of his own and others' schools with various forms of reasoning in the Madhyamika treatises, others may suspect that the Madhyamika treatises were made to suppress other opponents and are treatises that focus on debate. In order to dispel this doubt, the subject matter of the master's treatise is the yogic practice of meditating on the suchness of the two truths." } ] ============================================================

Therefore, it is clearly stated in this treatise. The teacher's writings are not focused on debate, but to enable people to realize the true nature of reality. Through various rational methods, they clearly reveal the true nature of things, thereby elucidating the principles of yoga that lead to the understanding of the two truths. This should be understood. As it is said in the *Madhyamakāvatāra* (Entering the Middle Way): 'Writing treatises is not for attachment to debate, but to explain the truth for the sake of liberation. If explaining the truth destroys the views of other schools, there is no fault in this.' Thus it is said. If this treatise explains the stages of yoga for entering the true nature of the two truths, then what is its purpose? Through the stages of hearing, thinking, and meditating, understanding the true nature of the two truths leads to the attainment of the omniscient state, which perfectly fulfills the benefit of oneself and others. As stated in the sutra: 'The knower of the world, without hearing from others, teaches through these two truths. What is conventional and what is ultimate, there is no third truth.' Thus it is said. In the *Madhyamaka* (Middle Way) it is also said: 'The Dharma taught by the Buddhas is truly established based on the two truths.' Thus it is said. The second part includes the main subject and refuting wrong views. The first part is: How does this treatise explain the principles of the two truths? The commentary says: 'From how worldly things exist, through differentiation, it gradually reveals the ultimate truth.' As it is said: 'Without relying on the conventional truth, one cannot realize the ultimate truth. Without realizing the ultimate truth, one cannot attain Nirvana.' In this way, the first eight chapters of the sixteen chapters of this treatise explain how the conventional truth exists, through differentiation, as a method for realizing the ultimate truth. The latter eight chapters explain the ultimate truth. Among them, the first four chapters, by eliminating the four inverted views, fully clarify how the four worldly things exist in the correct conventional way. For example, the five aggregates, such as form, arise dependent on causes and conditions. These aggregates are also impermanent because they possess the nature of arising. Whatever is impermanent is certainly
