Because it is harmed by destruction even without eating, it is suffering. Whatever is suffering always causes aversion, so it is impure. Whatever is impure is to be abandoned, because clinging to self and what belongs to self, it is not appropriate to be completely grasped as self and what belongs to self, so it is selfless. Therefore, worldly things appear in a way that is the opposite of being upside down, and it is undoubtedly known that samsara is to be abandoned, so it implicitly shows that Buddhahood is to be attained. That Buddhahood is also attained by practicing the conduct of a Bodhisattva, so the fifth part shows the conduct of a Bodhisattva. Because the conduct of a Bodhisattva cannot be practiced when afflicted by disturbing emotions, the sixth part analyzes disturbing emotions. Because objects are the cause of the arising, increasing, and abiding of disturbing emotions, the seventh part analyzes objects. Objects are also the cause of the arising of disturbing emotions for those who do not understand the nature of phenomena and who have inappropriate attention, so in order to show its antidote—the ultimate truth—in order to make the listeners who are shown the nature of phenomena into suitable disciples, the eighth part shows the method of taming the disciples' minds. Because the ultimate reality of the Dharma is to be shown when the mind is completely purified, after that, through four distinctions, in the manner described above, from the conduct of a Bodhisattva to the taming of disciples, the entering Bodhicitta is shown. After that, through the latter eight distinctions, the ultimate Bodhicitta, which is the nature of non-dual wisdom, is shown. Thus, this treatise, which has sixteen distinctions, as the teacher Nagarjuna said: 'If oneself and this world wish to attain unsurpassed Bodhi, its root, Bodhicitta, is as stable as the king of mountains, and compassion that extends to all directions, and wisdom that does not rely on duality.' In order to show without omission the three main dharmas that are the cause of perfect enlightenment, it is to show that all the conditions for a person in the world to attain unsurpassed Bodhi are complete.

Now, regarding the nature of action, there are two kinds of wrong conceptions to be dispelled. The first is that it is divided into two types by present-day poets. These sixteen chapters, as explained, are the nature of one treatise, but how did the present-day poet, the monk Dharmapala, separate the arrangement and say that there are two treatises? The first eight chapters are the hundred dharmas, and the latter eight chapters are the hundred contentions. Now I will unify it and distinguish it. I, Chandrakirti, will distinguish these sixteen chapters as the nature of one treatise, and by doing so, the intention of the author of the treatise will be fulfilled, thus maintaining the previous arrangement. This will also bring greater benefit to those who need to be benefited, because the ways of practicing the two truths that the treatise wants to express are all included, thus perfectly accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others. The second is that the monk Dharmapala also explained the nature of the meaning of the treatise, mainly according to his own preferences, as the view of the Mind-Only school. This is unreasonable, because the master Aryadeva is considered to be a disciple of the master Nagarjuna. Therefore, his ultimate reality is no different from the school of the master Nagarjuna. Therefore, if someone distinguishes their natures, then saying that their schools are different is very rash, because he has a wrong view of its dharma nature. The third is that this treatise has four hundred verses, so it should be called the "Four Hundred Treatises" (Sanskrit Devanagari: चतुःशतकशास्त्र, Sanskrit Romanization: Catuḥśatakaśāstra, Chinese literal meaning: Four Hundred Treatises), but in the fundamental Sanskrit text, the "Hundred Treatises" (Sanskrit Devanagari: शतकशास्त्र, Sanskrit Romanization: Śatakaśāstra, Chinese literal meaning: Hundred Treatises) appears.
