Growing wisdom arises without being devoured by demons. From the Four Hundred Verses on Yoga Practice, "Teaching the Cultivation of Refuting Attachment," which is the commentary on the fourteenth chapter. Explanation of the Fifteenth Chapter Second, refuting the nature of characteristics such as arising, divided into four parts: establishing it in the manner of unborn illusion, showing the emptiness of the nature of characteristics, preventing the nature of arising, and showing the conclusion of that prevention. The first part has two: refuting arising, and showing the result of the refutation. The first part has five, the first being the refutation by examining the aspects of existence and non-existence: Here it is said, conditioned things exist by their own nature, because their characteristics such as arising exist. If it is asked: If characteristics exist, then conditioned things should exist, but they do not. How so? Here, does this arising produce something existent or non-existent when it produces conditioned things? To this, for the moment, according to those who say that the result does not exist, there is no sprout in the state of the seed, so the sprout arises at the last moment of the seed when the causes and conditions gather. Therefore, if it is said that a non-existent sprout arises at the last moment of the seed, that is not reasonable, because then horns of a donkey and so forth would also arise. Therefore, how can something non-existent arise? It is impossible for something non-existent to arise. If, fearing that fault, those who say that the result exists say that something existent arises, then the sprout that already exists before the seed, because it has already arisen from the beginning, it is not reasonable for it to arise again, because its own nature is already established, so arising has no function. If something existent arises, then it will never not arise, so arising will be endless. That is also impossible, so how can something existent arise? It is impossible for something existent to arise. Furthermore, when the sprout arises as a result, it is the destruction of the cause called the seed, because the sprout does not arise unless the seed ceases. Therefore, the sprout will not arise from something non-existent, because something non-existent has no power to destroy the seed. Therefore, something non-existent does not arise. For the sprout that is already established, there is no further establishing function, therefore something existent also does not arise. Because the time of arising is impossible, there is also no arising, like the sprout's

When its own essence is established, there is no birth, because it is the essence of what is already established. When it is not established apart from what is established, there is no birth, because what is not established has no basis, so the action of birth does not occur. When it is slightly established and another is slightly not established and is in the process of being established, both become faults of expression, so it is not born. When birth is impossible in all three aspects, when will there ever be birth? Here someone says that milk turning into yogurt is birth. That is also unreasonable, because milk, which temporarily abides in the essence of milk, does not have birth in that essence, because the essence of milk is already there. Therefore, just as milk does not have birth in its own essence, so too, in the essence of yogurt, it is not born from that milk, because if examined, the essence of yogurt does not exist in milk. Second, refuting by examining the beginning, middle, and end: From this also, there is no birth of compounded things, because the initial birth, the intermediate abiding, and the final destruction do not exist before birth, so there are no compounded things before birth. If you think that it is birth at the time of birth, abiding at the time of abiding, and destruction at the time of destruction, that is also unreasonable, because these three are only different times, and at each time, the other two do not exist. Therefore, when the two characteristics of abiding and destruction, etc., do not exist, how can each of the births, etc., be done? Because if each of these characteristics does not exist, then the compounded thing itself does not exist. Third, refuting by examining self and other: From this also, there is no birth of compounded things, because the pot is not established by its own essence, because it depends on clay. Clay is not established by its own essence, because it depends on mud. Therefore, without the other thing, clay, the pot's own thing does not arise, and since clay has no own essence, it does not become other by depending on the pot. Therefore, the pot does not arise from both self and other, because self and other are not established. Fourth, gradual and simultaneous
