Moreover, in springtime, the mirage moved by the sunlight and wind, though empty of water, creates the illusion of water for those far away; clouds from a distance manifest inverted images of mountains and the like. Similarly, wise ones who know the nature of dependent origination as it is, even for them, due to the karma driven by ignorance, the container and contents of existence, like fire wheels and so on, are false, deceptive, and empty by nature, yet they appear and delude childish beings. Therefore, those who understand the nature of things are liberated in all ways by the cessation of attachment, because, like fire wheels and so on, there is no self-nature, this is the truth. From the Four Hundred Verses on the Yogic Practice, the commentary on the thirteenth chapter, called "Showing the Meditation on Refuting the Senses and Objects," is completed. Explanation of Chapter Fourteen. Fourth, refuting the clinging to extremes, which includes: showing that the nature of conditioned phenomena is emptiness; the root of mistaking things as real; summarizing and showing the reasoning of non-reality; and showing the necessity of realizing non-reality, these four parts exist. The first part includes: a brief statement and a detailed explanation. The first part is: Here it is said, if because of being dependently originated, existence is without self-nature like fire wheels and so on, then what would have self-nature? No thing can be investigated for self-nature, because things with self-nature are not observed in any way. For example, if something is established by its own essence and does not depend on anything else, then, because it is independent and does not rely on others, it would exist by itself, and thus be established as its own nature. However, things that are not born from causes and conditions, that do not depend on others, or things that arise without cause, do not exist at any time or place. Because it is so, no thing has self-nature, and therefore it exists like fire wheels and so on. The second part includes: refuting the collection formed by four combinations; refuting the existence of substance in the collection; refuting the existence of one and many; stating the reasoning for refuting the four extremes. The first part is: brief

Regarding the two ways of establishing through doctrine and debate. Firstly, if certain collections called 'vase' exist as entities here, are they one with their own collections or different? To this, for the moment, it is said that the form itself is the vase, but the vase is not one with the form, because wherever there is form, there must be a vase, and because attributes such as red arise from firing, when the blue form disappears, the vase will also disappear. If one wishes to avoid this fault and imagines that the vase has a meaning different from the form, like Devadatta possessing a cow with a different meaning, then imagining that the vase has a meaning different from the form, the vase possesses form, it cannot be considered that the vase is different from the form. Just as Devadatta can be considered different without relying on the cow, the vase must be different without relying on the form. If the vase and form are different, then it would be reasonable to be the supported and the supporter, like a wooden bowl and yogurt, but since there is no difference, the form does not exist relying on the vase, and the vase does not exist relying on the form. Therefore, the vase has no inherent existence. Secondly, regarding the two ways of refuting other schools and one's own school. Firstly, regarding the two ways of refuting definitions and refuting the defined object. Firstly, regarding the two ways of refuting being a common basis and refuting being a basis of qualities. Firstly, the Vaisheshikas say: Although form and vase are not different, existence itself and the vase are different, because existence itself is a great universal, and the vase is a particular substance, because it is related to existence itself, the vase is called existence. If it is considered that existence is a universal because it has the characteristic of following all substances, and the vase is a particular because it has the characteristic of being the opposite, and if the two characteristics of existence and vase are seen as inconsistent, then if the object, that is, existence, is different from the vase, then why wouldn't the object also be different from the vase because of the inconsistent characteristics? Therefore, merely because of inconsistent characteristics, different sounds and thoughts arise, so the root of different sounds and thoughts, the so-called difference itself, does not need to investigate the different meanings of qualities. Secondly, if the vase exists because it is a basis of qualities, such as one vase, two vases, and so on.
