That would happen. However, even if one goes to a place of silence, how can one generate the understanding that "this is sound" from the sound of silence? Because silence is not the nature of sound, it cannot be determined to be sound. Furthermore, if sound is perceived by contact with the ear, then the initial sound is not perceived by the ear, nor is it perceived by other senses. By which sense is the sound perceived? Therefore, that which is not perceived should not be considered sound. Sound is the nature of nine things: the four elements, the four derived elements, and sound itself. It cannot exist alone. How can one perceive a single sound? Odors and other things that are not different from the collection of sound should also be perceived, because they, like sound, come into contact with the ear sense. If the initial sound is not perceived by the senses, what fault is there? As long as the sound is not heard by the ear, it will not become sound, because it is not the object of the ear, just like odors and so on. If it becomes sound when it is heard, then that which was not initially the nature of sound will eventually become sound, which is unreasonable, just as odors and so on will not eventually become sound. Second, refuting the mind's grasping of objects: Just as the senses do not have the ability to grasp objects, the mind also does not have the ability to grasp objects. For example, does the mind go to the place of the object and then make a determination, or does it make a determination without going? If it does not go, then one mind would be able to determine all objects. If it goes and then makes a determination, does it go to the place of the object together with the senses, or does it go alone? Among these, it is impossible to go together with the senses, because the senses always abide in the body, and it would lead to the fault of the body being without senses. If it goes alone, then what function of seeing, etc., would the mind, separated from the senses such as the eye, perform after going to the place of the object? Because it would lead to the fault of blind people, etc., also having the function of seeing, etc. If one again thinks that this is how one understands the object after going to the place of the object, then because the objects are infinite, the understanding of the object is also endless, and therefore it will not return. If this is the case, then why is this sentient being always in a state of unconsciousness or mindlessness?

If it doesn't become mindless, then mindlessness shouldn't be considered "self," because pillars and vases would also become "self." Therefore, if analyzed in this way with reason, the senses, objects, and consciousness are all without inherent existence, thus establishing what is called "emptiness of inherent existence." Second, refuting the truth of the object-possessing perceiver. This is divided into two parts: the definition of the aggregate of perception and the proof that it is true. The first part is: If the senses and objects are without inherent existence, then how can there be perception that completely cuts off the distinctions of those things that are the cause of distinguishing them? If things had inherent existence, then perception could cut them off, but since things are without inherent existence, how could there be perception that cuts them off? Then, is perception completely nonexistent? It is not nonexistent, because there is the way of being without inherent existence. For example, when eye consciousness arises based on the eye and form, when it ceases, it ceases together with the sense objects. After it ceases, the objects such as forms that were previously seen are later apprehended by mental consciousness. How does it apprehend things that have already ceased? For example, although there is not even a drop of water in a mirage, due to the power of causes and conditions, a perception with the appearance of water arises. Similarly, for things that have ceased and are without inherent existence, there will also be a discriminating consciousness that thinks, "This is blue," "This is yellow," "This is pleasant," "This is unpleasant," thus distinguishing and cutting them off. Like that, the cause for distinguishing all phenomena such as form and feeling is called the aggregate of perception. Distinguishing the nature of phenomena and detailed classifications, etc., is also due to the function of perception, and not due to the inherent nature of things. Because everything is like an illusion, it is impossible to distinguish its inherent nature. Therefore, the cause for establishing all phenomena from form to omniscience is only perception, which is the nature of discrimination. Therefore, it is very clear that all conventional truths are merely imputed by discrimination. The basis of imputation is the object.
