Because it is free from ignorance. Isn't it the case that all those with eyes on earth commonly perceive the phenomena that appear? Just like that, if this Dharma is practiced, it will only benefit all groups of oneself and others. It will not exist due to jealousy. Therefore, having understood this way, one should be respectful, and these two Dharmas are worthy of being possessed. From the Four Hundred Verses, the explanation of the twelfth chapter, the "Examination of What Should Be Examined," is complete. Explanation of the Thirteenth Chapter. Third, refuting the sense objects. It is divided into two: refuting that all phenomena have true inherent existence; and that non-existence is similar to illusion, etc. The first is divided into three: refuting that the object of apprehension, the sense object, is truly existent; refuting that the subject of apprehension, the object-possessor, is truly existent; and showing that non-existence is the cause of wonder. The first is divided into two: a general refutation; and a separate analysis and refutation. The first is divided into three: the actual refutation; the conclusion of the refutation; and showing other reasons. The first is: The meaning of the reasoning is that even from others, the wise accept it because they want to benefit. So, what is the reasoning that is said to be acceptable? It is seeing that all internal and external phenomena are without self-nature. It is not possible to realize that phenomena are without self-nature, because the inherent nature of things like pots and blue color is directly perceived. If it is said that things like rabbit horns, which do not exist, are not directly perceived, that is also unreasonable, just as houses are established based on grass and trees, and the self is established based on the aggregates. Pots are established based on the four elements and the eight derivative substances. When the eye sees form, it does not see only all the parts of the pot, because the pot is the nature of the eight substances, and the eye sees form, not smell, etc., because the objects are different. Therefore, worldly people do not investigate, but take their own understanding as the standard and say whatever they please, "I directly perceived the pot." But who would say, "The pot is directly perceived," seeing one aspect is the same as seeing everything? Who would speak the words of a wise person who distinguishes in this way? It is not appropriate to say. Also

Therefore, it is shown that there is no direct perception even for the close acquisition of a vase, and for things like blue. With this reasoning that analyzes and refutes the direct perception of a vase, scholars with excellent wisdom should know that all objects of the nose sense, such as fragrant jasmine flowers, lotuses, utpalas, sandalwood, etc., and all objects of the tongue sense, such as sweet brown sugar, salty salt, and bitter neem, etc., and all objects of the body sense, such as soft kapok, sand, and stones, etc., should also be understood as being refuted individually as not being direct perceptions. This is because these are also the nature of the eight substances, and because the nature is such, the senses only grasp their respective objects, and do not grasp everything. Therefore, saying that jasmine flowers and brown sugar, etc., are direct perceptions is merely a worldly expression. What scholar who is proficient in reality would say such a thing? If it is said that the vase is not different from form, therefore seeing form will lead to seeing all vases, that is also meaningless. Because, if merely seeing form would lead to seeing all the visible parts of the vase, then since the other seven substances such as smell are not seen, why would it not be the case that seeing form is also not seeing? In the world, most people also speak in this way, for example, even if there are bean pods, etc., because most of it is beans, it is said to be a pile of beans. If it is said that the vase does not have direct perception, but the form of the vase has direct perception, therefore indirectly through form, the vase also becomes a direct perception, then even the form alone that is unrelated to smell, etc., is not itself a direct perception, because that form has front, back, side, and middle parts, and those parts also have other front, back, side, and middle parts, and those parts also have other parts, and so on, analyzing in this way, it will eventually reach the ultimate particle. For the ultimate particle, the analysis of whether or not there are front, back, side, and middle parts will also lead to the same conclusion. If there are parts such as front and back, then the ultimate particle will also be broken down like vases, etc. If the ultimate particle has no parts, then it cannot be

Because of existence, it becomes non-existent. Secondly, because it is so, direct perception itself is not established, and by means of what is to be established, it is not proper to establish the object to be established, along with its own nature, which others wish to establish. Thirdly, furthermore, if all the objects of the sense powers with form are examined, then all depend on their own parts and become parts, and then again depend on their own parts and become wholes. For example, a pot depends on its own proximate cause, the eight substances, and is a whole. And those substances also depend on their own parts, the subtle particles, and are wholes. And the subtle particles also depend on the front and back parts and become wholes. Therefore, there are no parts and wholes established by their own nature. Therefore, pots and so on are not directly perceived. Just as it is not established if one examines whether the edge of form, the subtle particle, has parts or not, so too it is not established if one examines the edge of a name, the letter. Therefore, the expression of the nature of letters is only a convention in this world, and does not exist by its own nature. Or, if pots and so on do not exist, then the expression of the letters that express them also does not exist. Because if there is no meaning, then knowledge and expression do not arise. This is the general statement. Secondly, refuting separately, divided into: refuting that the nature of the object is apprehended by the sense powers, and refuting that it is apprehended by consciousness. The first is divided into: refuting what is seen, and refuting what is heard. The first is divided into: refuting the object, and refuting the subject. The first is divided into: refuting one's own school, and refuting another's school. The first is: the Vaibhashika school of our own tradition believes that the sense sphere of form is the nature of both color and shape, and by means of being associated with it, a pot is the direct perception of what is to be seen. According to their view, is shape different from color or not different? If one thinks that shape is different in meaning from color, then how can shape be apprehended by the eye? Because it is different from color, like sound and so on. However, if one wants to avoid that fault and thinks that it is not different from color, but is the same, then why can't color be apprehended like the body apprehends the long shape of a dark space and so on? Because they are the same.
