Therefore, the doctrine of the naked ascetics is apprehended by the eye. The Brahmins consider the recitation of the Vedas as essential; since this is the object of the ear, the doctrine of the Brahmins is apprehended by the ear. The Shakya, with the sun of viewing things as devoid of inherent existence, illuminates the continuum of the mind, destroys the darkness of ignorance of wrong views, sees compounded things as similar to dreams, illusions, magic, and so forth, seeing them as devoid of inherent existence. Those whose continuum of mind has become stainless by completely removing the stains of afflictions, their doctrine is to be understood only through meditative equipoise. Therefore, the doctrine of the Shakyas is apprehended by the mind's consciousness, therefore the tenets of the Sage are subtle. Therefore, those who lack understanding, even if they desire merit, do not enter the Buddha's doctrine. If one were to enter the doctrine of the outsiders because it is an object of coarse intellect, should you also follow and practice in that way? The Brahmins desire gain and respect from others through actions such as auspicious speech, auspiciousness, fire offerings, and repentance, so their doctrine is mainly external adornment, and this doctrine is contrary to those who desire liberation, because it is in accordance with samsara and is a cause for increasing the afflictions close to attachment, so it was not taught by the Shakyas. Thus, since most of the Brahmins' doctrine is said to be external adornment, it is not to be practiced by those who desire liberation, just as most of the doctrines of the naked ascetics, such as plucking out hair, are said to make the mind dull, so it is not to be practiced by those who desire liberation. Therefore, what they have taught is not to be followed. If what they have taught is faulty, why do people respect them? Because most of the Brahmins' doctrine is external adornment, most of the world is pleased with mere recitation, and respect arises for the Brahmins from taking the recitation of the Vedas and so forth as correct knowledge. Just as respect arises from their taking knowledge, so too, from enduring afflictions such as plucking out hair, respect arises for evil.
