Therefore, one cannot completely eliminate it by oneself. If one completely eliminates it by grasping onto things, then, if the cause of time, the thing, exists, then time exists, but the thing does not exist. Like this, things perish in each moment, and there is no abiding. Because there is no abiding, where would there be an entity of time? There is none. Why is there no abiding? Where would there be abiding for a thing consumed by impermanence? If abiding exists, then from a thing that abides without changing, aging, which is a change from one state to another, would not occur. Because these two are mutually contradictory. If abiding exists at first, then later it would also abide in that same state, and ultimately it would not become old. Therefore, realize that there was no previous abiding. From this reasoning, there is also no abiding. Like this, if a later consciousness also apprehends whatever object was apprehended by a previous consciousness, and thus one thinks that the object seen previously abides between the later consciousnesses, then this is not possible. Because just as a single moment of consciousness cannot distinguish between previous and later objects, similarly, if two moments of consciousness, previous and later, cannot distinguish a single object, then objects are also momentary by their very nature of arising dependently. Therefore, it does not abide between the duration of the two consciousnesses. If so, then in the Abhidharma, "The five of the later consciousness of the two," it is said that two consciousnesses know five objects. Is this contradictory? There is no fault. Because the sense consciousnesses arise with the aspect of manifest appearance that completely eliminates the present object. And these also cease together with their own objects. Therefore, from the power of the cause of the sense consciousnesses, a mental consciousness arises, which appears to be manifestly clear with the aspect of the object of the sense consciousnesses. In worldly terms, it is said to be the object of knowledge of two consciousnesses. But in reality, the mental consciousness only grasps the general aspect of the object of the sense consciousnesses, and not its own nature. Because it has ceased at that time. If abiding exists, it is because it is the nature of present time. Because without abiding, the present itself is impossible. Then, does time have abiding or not? If time exists by relying on abiding, because the support and the supported are different, abiding is time.

It will not change, just as the householder in the house does not become the house itself. Therefore, existence is not the nature of time, so it is not a characteristic of time either. If there is no existence in time, then there will be no end, i.e., destruction, for time without existence. Therefore, the present time will last for a long time. In that case, since time is eternal, the present things will also be eternal. If existence exists, it is because the things associated with it have the nature of impermanence. If something called impermanence exists by its own characteristics, is it different from or the same as the thing? Neither is reasonable. If impermanence is different from the thing, then the thing will not become impermanent but will become eternal, because impermanence with different characteristics does not exist in it. If the thing and impermanence are the same, then impermanence itself is the thing, where does the thing exist? Existence will completely disappear because it is the nature of impermanence. Therefore, there is no existence, and because there is no existence, there is no thing, and because there is no thing, there is no time either. It was also said before: Where does the non-existent thing perish? Where does existence exist in impermanence? To this, even if there is existence, there is also impermanence. At the time of existence, existence is very powerful, but not impermanence, because it is weak and cannot destroy the strong. If impermanence itself is weak at the time when existence has power, then later the weak will be seen to transform into a powerful force that can destroy existence, or it will have power from the beginning, or it will still be weak later. Because there is no difference between the prior and later causes and conditions. Similarly, if existence is not weak but powerful at the time of existence, then how can it be seen that they will inevitably turn from powerful to weak, and impermanence will have the small power to destroy? This is a word of dissatisfaction showing refutation. Furthermore, if impermanence is not weak but powerful, and it is universally present in all things, then at that time all things will have no existence, because whatever is impermanent
