It is that which has the fruit of function, but not that which has the fruit of substance. The substance of its own nature, which abides in all three times, is merely made to exist in the present moment by the assembly of causes and conditions, but it does not produce a substance that did not exist before, so I think. Thus, according to the Samkhya and Vaisheshika schools, who assert that the fruit exists, for the sake of a house, the pillars and lintels and other decorations, and the special features adorned with peacocks and other things, would become meaningless, because the fruit is the house. If it is said that decorating the house with ornaments and the like is to accomplish other forms, then, in that case, because one is newly creating a special feature that did not exist before, one would have to abandon the assertion that the fruit exists. Those who assert that the fruit does not exist are the Vaisheshika, Sautrantika, and Vijnanavada schools. They think that it is meaningless for the fruit to be produced when it already exists, and they imagine that only what does not exist is produced. According to their view, decorating pillars and the like for the sake of a house would also become meaningless, because the fruit is the absence of a house. Non-existence cannot be accomplished by anyone, like the son of a barren woman. Just as the faults mentioned above arise for those who assert the existence and non-existence of the fruit, so too, external and internal things, such as sprouts and volitions, and their causes, such as seeds and ignorance, would become meaningless. We who assert the absence of inherent existence, because we do not accept existence and non-existence as the nature of things, have no opportunity for error, and everything is established. The arising of anything is not existent before its arising, because arising would be meaningless; but it is also not non-existent, because it arises in dependence on the assembly of causes and conditions. Therefore, the wise should abandon both extremes and accept dependent origination. This is merely accepted as a standard for the purpose of guiding the world. As for the Svatantrika-Madhyamaka school itself, it does not even accept dependent origination. As it is said in the *Madhyamakavatara*: 'As you accept other-powered entities, I do not accept conventional truth either. Although these are non-existent for the sake of the fruit, I say that they exist in the eyes of the world.' Because it is said thus, and there is no valid cognition of the Svatantrika-Madhyamaka school that establishes dependent origination.

Furthermore, the meaning unproven by valid cognition (pramāṇa) is not accepted by anyone who presumes prior conceptions. If the Madhyamaka school considers only the non-conceptual wisdom of the noble ones' meditative equipoise as valid cognition, then the meaning proven by it does not even exist to the extent of a hundredth part of a hair's tip. Therefore, it should be understood that the Madhyamaka school has no commitments of its own system. Secondly, the refutation of the present: If the past and future are negated, then the present exists, and because of its existence, the future will also exist. If someone says that the complete transformation of the future is the present, then that is also unreasonable because the complete transformation itself is not established. If it is thought that there is a complete transformation in the future, is it understood through the loss of its own essence, or through remaining unchanged? If it is the former, then one thing disappears and another arises, which is transformation, and it is merely given the name of transformation of arising and ceasing. If someone says: The transformation we speak of is not like that, for example, the essence of cow's milk remains the same, but another quality changes from the state of milk to the state of yogurt, similarly, the future state of the three guṇas—rajas (Tibetan: རྡུལ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: रजस्, Sanskrit Romanization: rajas, literal meaning: dust, passion), sattva (Tibetan: སྙིང་སྟོབས་, Sanskrit Devanagari: सत्त्व, Sanskrit Romanization: sattva, literal meaning: सत्त्व, purity), tamas (Tibetan: མུན་པ་, Sanskrit Devanagari: तमस्, Sanskrit Romanization: tamas, literal meaning: darkness, ignorance)—transforms into the present state. Then, the world has not seen the future three guṇas being determined to transform into the present, therefore this transformation is unreasonable. Yogurt is also not a modification of milk, because milk and yogurt are seen as different in taste and effect, and there is no substance of them other than taste and effect. Therefore, the so-called transformation of future things into the present is not apprehended even by the mind, let alone the five sensory consciousnesses, which can completely determine subtle, interrupted, and non-material things. Although the transformation of the cause of the present is not determined in the manner described above, even so, those who are not intelligent and are foolish, who cannot determine their own nature, think that the present exists. Secondly, refuting the reasons for establishment, there are two: refuting the reasons for the establishment of objects and refuting the reasons for the establishment of memory. Firstly: Time exists because its cause—objects—exists. Time is not corporeal.
