If you think that death is not to be feared because it can be remedied by taking medicine, etc., then disease can be treated with medicine, and aging can be remedied with tonics, so you may not fear those. But the final punishment, the Lord of Death, cannot be remedied by anything, so you should most clearly fear that death. It is not appropriate to deceive yourself with the mere hope of remedies for aging and disease. Fourth, refuting that uncertainty is a reason for not fearing: If it is said that there is such a thing as death that cannot be averted by human power, but even so, it is not a cause for great fear because it is not certain now, then if death were unique and did not appear, it would be true to say that. But death is not difficult to understand, just as the animals to be slaughtered have death in common and see each other die. Death is also common to all beings. Furthermore, when many others appear to be dying, what reason do you have not to fear the Lord of Death? There are two reasons why one might not fear death: not perceiving it, and transcending it. If you do not have these two, then why do you act so carelessly? If you say that even though death is evident, you do not fear it because the time of death is uncertain, if you think that because the time of death is uncertain, you will not die and are eternal, then it is very foolish to say that you do not fear it because the time of death is uncertain, when it is precisely that uncertainty that should cause fear. For the Lord of Death may come and harm you at any time, whether today or tomorrow. Therefore, one should abandon hope for a long life, manifest the thought of death, and be vigilant. Fifth, refuting the idea that death is not a cause of fear for heroes: If it is said that death is certain, but that it only causes fear for cowards, not for heroes, because heroes are devoted to gaining wealth, honor, and fame, and do not fear sharp weapons falling on their bodies or danger on the battlefield, and because they see themselves as capable of harming others, then for the sake of the future benefits of this life,

Observing gain and respect, etc., for what purpose does one pursue gain and respect, etc., without observing the exhaustion of the living support that utilizes immediate needs, and instead enters the battlefield? Selling one's own life to accomplish future matters, which wise person would say that you are wise? No wise person would say such a thing. Only the foolish are amazed by such behavior. If sacrificing one's life for wealth is blameworthy, then should one also commit sins to protect one's own life? For example, some people pawn themselves to drink alcohol, disregarding the suffering of poverty, etc., that they will experience in the future. Similarly, due to attachment to objects that are like mirages, disregarding the intense suffering of hell, etc., why do you pawn yourself there and commit sinful deeds for the sake of desire? Therefore, you who commit sins for the sake of desirable qualities must certainly be like the Arhats, without attachment to me. Otherwise, it is unreasonable to commit sins that cause suffering to oneself, and it should not be done. The second point is: Furthermore, it is unreasonable to sell oneself and commit sins in this life because of the hope of living long. For any sentient being, what is called living is nothing other than each moment of the mind. Thus, all conditioned phenomena are momentary, because they are destroyed immediately upon arising, without obstruction. Impermanence also depends solely on arising. If all conditioned phenomena are momentary, then how can the people of the world, who believe that living is long, engage in unreasonable behavior? Because the momentary conditioned phenomena that arise continuously are similar before and after, they are deceived. Beings certainly do not recognize that moment, believing that living is long, and thus engage in unreasonable behavior. Therefore, it is rare to find someone in the world who knows their own nature as it is, like me. Those who know their own nature do not commit sins because they have no cause for reversal. But most people in the world are immersed in sin. If living is momentary, but its continuation is long, so it is reasonable to be attached to it, if you say so, you like to live long, and the wrinkles and hair associated with it

Since you dislike aging with wrinkles and the like, alas, this perverse behavior of yours seems sacred only to foolish people like yourself, not to others. Therefore, one who does not wish to age should not cling to permanence. Second, regarding why one should not grieve for the death of others, there are two parts: a general statement and a determination through refutation. First, although one does not wish for aging and death, if it is said that where these two exist is the cause of sorrow, just as they exist in oneself, then you yourself have become one who possesses the law of death, because you have not performed the act of transcending death, so you should grieve for your own death. Why should you grieve for the death of sons and others? You shouldn't! Like this, if someone has transcended the lord of death, then it is reasonable to grieve for the death of others. While one has clearly become an object used by the lord of death, how can one who says that another has been taken by the lord of death not be blamed by other noble ones? Therefore, when seeing others die, one should ascertain that one is also like them, thereby maintaining vigilance, and not always entering the room of sorrow, thereby harming the side of virtue. The second part has six points. First, refuting that going without asking is the cause of sorrow: Even so, if it is said that being fully accepted as a son, going to the next world without asking is the cause of suffering, then when a certain sentient being has not been entrusted by you to say "Please be my son," but has become a son of his own accord, even if he wants to go to the next world, he should not leave without asking "I am leaving," because both coming and going are acting at will, this is its nature. Or, this is not going without asking either, because he has already allocated the share of going to the next world without words, but you yourself, because of ignorance, have not realized that the son has allocated the share of going. What is the manner of allocating this share of going? His joy of going to the next world, through the complete transformation of the connection from one moment to the next, is caused by aging and weakening.
