. Explanation of Chapter Eleven. Sixth, refuting the permanence of time. This has two aspects: stating the former position and refuting it. The first aspect: Those who assert time say that the statement "I am not permanent" does not mean that there is no permanent entity in all respects, because there is time. Here, although the elements such as earth and seeds exist, the arising and destruction of fruits, sprouts, flowers, etc., occur because time is not always present, but only occasionally. From this, it is inferred that time exists, and it is manifested by moments, instants, and brief periods. Therefore, there is a permanent entity that is different from the entities that exist in the three times, they say. The second aspect is to refute the nature of time. This has two aspects: refuting its proof and refuting it itself. The first aspect has two aspects: refuting the past and future, and refuting the present. The first aspect has three aspects: refuting the future as substantially existent, refuting the past as substantially existent, and specifically refuting the future. The first aspect: If time exists as a distinct real entity, it must be observable, but it is not observed, and it has already been refuted. It cannot be established by its own nature, but must be established through the distinctions of objects such as pots that exist in the three times. Therefore, time must be refuted by refuting these objects. Therefore, to represent future time, a future pot is posited; to represent past and present time, past and present pots are posited. The future is what has not yet arrived at the present time. The past is what has passed from the present. The present is what is happening but has not yet ceased. These three times exist in dependence on each other, because without any two, a single one cannot exist. The future cannot be established without depending on the past and present, because the future comes from the future. In any case, the future must inevitably become past and present. The establishment of the other two times should be understood in the same way. Therefore, in a future pot, there is no present pot, nor is there a past pot, because they have different characteristics from the future, and one cannot exist in the other. Because the past and present do not exist in the future pot.

Therefore, the past and the present, due to the future acting on the future, both of those also become the future. When both the past and the present are the future, then all three times are the future, so the past and the present are not established. In that case, where is the future established by the future? Therefore, the future time does not exist by its own nature. If you say that the past pot is not completely non-existent in the future pot, but exists in the future in the nature of the future, so there is no fault as mentioned above. If the decaying past and the future exist in the future in the nature of the future, then how can the past pot that exists in the nature of the future become the past? Because it exists in the future. Furthermore, does your future exist or not? If it is established that it exists because it exists in the nature of the future, then the future itself is impossible, because the future object abides in the nature of the future, therefore it will become the present. If you say that even if it exists in the nature of the future, it does not exist in the nature of the present, so it will not become the present. Whatever one's own nature is, it exists in that nature, that is the present, just as blue exists in the nature of blue, it is the present. The future will also become the present because it exists in the nature of the future. Therefore, since the future does not exist, the other two times that depend on it also do not exist. The Vaibhashikas believe that things that are established by their own characteristics exist in the future, and also exist unchanged in the past, and also exist in the present. According to their view, what things do not exist? Impermanence will become non-existent. In this way, according to whose view all three times exist, according to his view, where does impermanence itself come from? Because whatever appears to the mind now in the nature of anything, that thing also exists unchanged in the past and future. If this is the case, it will contradict the Buddha's statement: 'Alas! Conditioned things are impermanent, they are of the nature of arising and ceasing, having arisen, they cease, those quickly pacify and are happy.' Second is: How
