Because it exists, this is because it contradicts reason and is not accepted by the world. Fifth, refuting the "self" as the agent: The Vaisheshika school believes that the "self" is the agent of both dharma and non-dharma actions, and also the enjoyer of their maturation. However, their "self" should not be permanent. Because if this "self" is the agent, it must be admitted that it has the cause of action. Because one who does nothing is not seen as an agent. That which is associated with action is also not permanent, because if there is no difference before the commencement of action, it is impossible to perform the action. Furthermore, if it is thought that this "self" pervades all places, then since there is no place that is not occupied, there will be no actions such as walking, coming, going, and dwelling. If, fearing these faults, one admits that the "self" has no action, then the "self" without action is equivalent to non-existence. Because things that have the nature of existence are established as existing by doing something, but those who do nothing cannot be established as existing like a flower in the sky. Because without action, the "self" is equivalent to non-existence. Why are you not happy with no-self? Because it is the cause of reversing all non-righteous views, it is reasonable to be happy. Second, general refutation: If this "self" exists by its own nature like the heat of fire, then for all, the cognition with it as its object would not be different. However, this is not the case. For example, some of the Vaisheshika and Samkhya schools see the non-different "self" in each body as pervading all places like the sky. Some of them think that different bodies are posited as different, just as the same moon appears different due to the influence of water in different containers. Some of the Jains see shrinking and expanding in bees, ants, elephants, and so on, because the size of the purusha's body is different. As it is said: The naked one's body is the measure, The life is said to shrink and expand. Some cannot bear shrinking and expanding, so they see the "self" as just the size of a dust particle. Relying on the teachings of the Sugata, correct knowledge arises, and one recognizes dependent origination.

Those wise ones who directly know the nature of reality see the self as without inherent existence. Seeing it in this way, because of the difference in views, they realize that the self does not exist by its own nature. Furthermore, if the self existed by its own nature, it would not be possible to be liberated. For example, in samsara, meditating on an antidote to the permanent self, which is accompanied by oppression, would not cause any harm, not even a little. Without harm to the state of being accompanied by oppression, how could one attain liberation, which is the abandonment of oppression? Therefore, those who believe in a permanent self cannot reasonably attain liberation. Therefore, those who desire liberation should only accept dependent origination. Dependent origination is momentary, and since cause and effect arise without interruption, and since birth ceases when the causes and conditions are incomplete, liberation is reasonable. Furthermore, all extraordinary beings who desire liberation assert that they are liberated by completely eradicating the self and the clinging to self. Therefore, if the self existed by its own nature, since there is no reversal in nature, there would still be something called "self" even in the state of liberation. If that were the case, it would not be reasonable to realize that there is no self and to abandon self-grasping, because the cause of the arising of self-grasping, the self, would still exist undiminished, just like in the state of samsara. Therefore, the assertion that one attains nirvana through the certainty of abandoning self-grasping by realizing the suchness of the self would also be false. Therefore, those who desire liberation should accept the absence of self, because liberation is reasonably attained through the absence of self and the abandonment of self-grasping. If the self existed, there would be the danger of self-grasping arising at the time of liberation. If one accepts that at the time of liberation there is the nature of no-self, and that one is liberated by realizing this, then the nature of the self that appears to the consciousness of liberation did not exist in the previous time of samsara, and the non-existence is just like the nature of the self was before. Because it is said that whatever is seen by a non-deluded consciousness in a solitary entity, without being associated with anything else, is its nature. For example, when gold is mixed with iron, its inner nature is not clear, but when it is not mixed with iron, the way its own entity is perceived is its nature. Likewise, the self is like that.
