Isn't it true that one might wrongly conceive of things like the individual as "I"? Indeed, it is. Secondly, refuting the proofs for the self is threefold. First, refuting that it is the cause of entering and departing [from samsara]: If the self exists by its own nature, it is because it is the cause of entering and departing from samsara. If there were no self, who would perform virtuous and non-virtuous actions, experience their results, and wander in samsara? Who would strive on the path to liberation and become liberated? Therefore, the self exists by its own nature. If you say that, when you say that the self wanders in other lifetimes, does this self follow the distinctions of the body in other lifetimes, or does it not? If it does not, then the self that does not follow the body is meaningless to be considered as wandering in samsara. If it does follow, then just as the body changes from birth to birth, so too will the person change, because it follows the body's appearance. Therefore, your self cannot be different from the body, because it follows the changing form of the body. For example, like a part of the body. It also cannot be permanent, because it is not different from the body, just like the body's own nature. Second, refuting that it is the mover of the body, [which has] two parts: the main point and, secondarily, stating what harms the self being permanent. The first is: If there is no self, then because there is no mover, the movements of the body, such as stretching and contracting, would not exist. Therefore, just as the mover of a chariot is Devadatta, it must also be admitted that the mover of the body is the inner agent, the person. If you say that, that is also unreasonable. A chariot is moved only by contact, not by non-contact. The self that you have conceived is also non-contact, because it sometimes does not have a body. It is impossible for an object that is non-contact to cause another object to move, like space. Therefore, the movements of the body, such as stretching and contracting, and the self as the agent, are not established. Therefore, it is unreasonable to infer the self from the movements of the body. If you also admit that the non-contact mind is the mover of the body, as stated earlier, the uncomprehending mind goes.

Because (they) said, "Because merit and so on are not seen, therefore, for all actions, one should say that the mind is the main thing." Therefore, you have the same fault. I do not admit that the mind is not endowed with contact, because there is the mental factor of contact, which is the nature of the aggregation of object, faculty, and consciousness. Since consciousness is endowed with the body, it will become the driver of the body. You do not admit that I am endowed with contact, so it is not the same. Or, the mind is the cause of all phenomena, and the wind element born from it is endowed with contact, and driven by it, so the wind element is endowed with contact, which is reasonable. Second, if I am permanent, then poison and weapons, etc., cannot harm it in any way. For example, a vajra without fear of harm will not become something that protects wood from woodworms in any way. Therefore, for me, what is the reason for not contradicting the non-harm taught as Dharma to protect against harm, and this permanent self? I think there is only contradiction, so I do not admit the existence of a permanent self, or you should say another reason, but you did not say it, so this is unreasonable. Third, refuting the argument for the permanent self: If I am only permanent, because there is the ability to remember past lives. Those formations that arise and immediately perish cannot remember other generations. If I am permanent, then it will flow into other generations, so remembrance is reasonable. This is also unreasonable, for example, some people were stabbed to death by weapons in their previous lives, and in this life they also see that the traces of previous wounds have become goiters, and they remember their previous lives, saying that this is the weapon that stabbed my body before, thus recalling the previous experiences. Therefore, if you say that I am permanent because you remember your previous lives, saying that I was like this and that before. Then, because you see the goiters of the wounds on your previous body, and thus remember the experiences of your previous body, how can your body be impermanent? It will become permanent. Therefore, the previous body and the present body cannot be other than cause and effect. Therefore, observing the present body and remembering the previous
