Therefore, wishing for goodness, we should accept this worldly truth, but not accept the ultimate truth in all ways. Because in the worldly truth, there is a slight designation based on things like pots and cloths, but in the ultimate truth, neither samsara nor nirvana exists. Therefore, just as one would not pluck out one's eyes for fear of eye disease, similarly, by being disgusted with the suffering of samsara, it is superior to abandon suffering itself, but not to make everything non-existent. In the Four Hundred Verses on Yoga Practice, the teaching on meditating on the refutation of permanent things is the commentary on the ninth chapter. Explanation of the Tenth Chapter. Secondly, it is divided into refuting the self and eliminating the fault of annihilation in non-self. The first part has two parts: individual refutation and general refutation. The first part has five points. First, in refuting the specific self, there are two parts: refuting the essence and refuting the proof. The first part is: If something called self exists by its own essence, then because it is not seen in nirvana and because of the fear of annihilation, it would become "this world is superior," etc. Therefore, the self does not exist by its own essence. If it exists, then it must necessarily become a male, a female, or a hermaphrodite, because there is no other distinction. The heretics assert two selves, namely the inner and outer self. The first dwells inside the body and causes the collection of faculties to enter the object, is the inner agent, is the object of ego-grasping, and is the one who enjoys the fruits of virtue and non-virtue. The outer self is the nature of the aggregation of body and faculties, and benefits the inner self. If the inner self is conceived as a woman, then since it is a nature that does not abandon its own nature, even if it is transferred to another life, it will always be a woman because it does not depend on others. However, this is not the case, because confusion is also observed, and womanhood, etc., are not qualities of the self. Therefore, when the inner self is not a woman, and as stated above, is not a man, nor a hermaphrodite, then at that time, it is only due to the power of ignorance and delusion that you think, "I am a man, I am a woman, I am a hermaphrodite."

For example, it is like mistaking a rope for a snake because one does not recognize its own nature. If you say that male, etc., are external signs, and that because of their association, the internal self is also always considered to be male, etc., then, when the external self, the four great elements that compose the body, do not inherently possess the nature of male, female, or hermaphrodite. If they did, then all bodies would have definite signs because they would follow the nature of those elements. Even slimy things, etc., contain elements, so the signs of male, female, etc., which are the nature of those elements, would be identifiable. But this is not the case. If that were so, why would the external self, those elements themselves, become male, female, or hermaphrodite? That is unreasonable. If you say that you are equally at fault for clinging to male, female, etc., based on the elements of the body, then, we say that because we are dependently originated, the elements are without inherent existence. For things without inherent existence, like mechanical devices and illusory men and women, it is not contradictory to be without signs and later possess signs, so there is no fault of definite signs in any case. You say that the elements have inherent existence, but inherent existence cannot change, so the signs must necessarily be as the inherent existence is. Furthermore, just as there is no fire in the world that is not hot, if the self exists by its own nature, then the self of one person must be the self of all, so the object of your grasping at self is not my self, because it is not the object of our grasping at self, nor is it the object of clinging to self. Because that is so, that object of your grasping at self is not the self as its own entity, because it is not the definite object of everyone's grasping at self. If there is no self, then from what do these two, grasping at self and clinging to self, arise? As has been said, because the self that is different from the aggregates has not been found. Just as one relies on the parts of a chariot and calls it a chariot, so too, relying on impermanent and selfless things like form, one calls it self, sentient being, life, being born, born of power, agent, and feeler.
